The path to Digital Leadership A practical guide on incident management

I just finished reading 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho and I think it is one of those stories that stays with you and takes a while to transform you. One line however has stayed very much in the forefront of my mind, like a splinter that doesn't hurt but needs to be worked out. it is this "...if something happens twice, it will surely happen a third time" and in the book it does. Six Sigma on the other hand tells us that something must happen 8 times before we can determine a pattern has formed. Why is there such a big gap? In Service Management, problem management is more important than incident management because it presents opportunities to learn, predict, automate, and continuously improve. Once something has been pointed out to you, you notice it more. On my commute this morning, in a subtle interaction with another driver I positioned my car in a certain way twice. They were in the right hand lane with no reason to be there and had those mirrors with the light that warns when a vehicle is close in the next lane. it is possible to make that light come on, by carefully moving up a little closer than normal. On the third occasion, the driver of the other vehicle accelerated away, proving Paolo Alto's hypothesis to be the one closer to a universal truth. If we wait for something to happen 8 times before we take action, that to me feels too slow. But how we respond is equally important. See if you can notice something that happens twice today and if it happens a third time, make sure you know why.
