Insightful to hear Parliamentary committee and stakeholders discussing the Future for Data in Logistics!
A snippet of the topics raised included developing people skills in the field, making data meaningful and delivering intelligence, advancing tech and the future scope for cross-sector data sharing.
Some of the highlights:
- A focus as to where the subject sits alongside existing frameworks, including the Government's skills agenda, advancing digital strategy and Generation Logistics. (Not to forget the role of digital and data apprenticeships!)
- There isn't necessarily a lack of data, but lots more to be explored in how best its aggregated, made meaningful and providing us with one version of the truth.
- Advancing technologies within the Road space - Optimising fleet management, AI in the EV setting including access to vehicle charging, and journey planning. Pilot studies around optimising shipment loading and unloading.
- What does the future look like for data sharing? Considering competition in the market, data sharing is largely concentrated vertically, but more to be explored by the industry around horizontal and cross-sector sharing to drive wider industry advancement.

Logistics UK's Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ben Garratt spoke at a Transport Select Committee session this week on the Future of Transport Data. The session explored the opportunity for data to revolutionise the logistics sector. It was also highlighted that data has already created efficiencies, higher standards, and lower carbon emissions within the sector.
Logistics UK stressed that there is a wealth of data collected by Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, National Highways, Network Rail, and others, but suggested that collecting this data better would be supported by more strategic data objectives from the sector as a whole. We also highlighted the importance of focusing on goals, rather than having a data-sharing first approach. It is easier to share and aggregate data if the shared purpose is clear.
