The Hypothesis: What does ‘INTEGRATED ECOLOGIES’ mean and how would a reimagined Birchwood look like based on this principle? We are defining ‘Integrated Ecologies’ as an instance where the thresholds between various contextual factors are intertwined allowing for interaction between the different defined ecologies. In Birchwood, the current thresholds between the landscape and the urban development have changed from the original projection for the site due to the lack of maintenance, with the natural environment becoming a barrier between the landscape and the urban. Although from an ecological perspective the new landscape has been successful, it has not fully allowed people to interact with their given landscape. As part of the Labour conference held in Liverpool in October 2023, the proposal for a fourth wave of New Towns has prompted us to look more closely at the successes and failures of historical New Towns, to aid our future proposal for Birchwood. We are arguing that before creating entirely new developments, we should look to improve existing ones, identifying any issues and combatting them with realistic solutions. By analysing the definition of the new term ‘grey belt’ we were able to locate spaces within this criterion as part of our case study of Birchwood, Warrington. We have identified a series of under integrated landscapes in Birchwood that have overgrown their original projections. These could benefit from interventions that would encourage the residents and people from the wider area to better engage with them. The interventions should appeal to different generations and help reinstate a sense of community and involvement with the landscape. In response to the identified issue, we have come up with a series of objectives that will shape the future development of our project. Green spaces like parks, squares, and gardens are more prominent and accessible in elite locations. But don’t you think that everyone has equal rights to enjoy open spaces, irrespective of where they live?
