I came across this interesting take on customer value chain being disrupted digitally and how to unlock the customer value chain by using decoupling and coupling methods. What is customer value chain ? Customer value chain in the process of getting the job done for the customer by delivering goods or services through a series of activities. Decoupling in the Customer Value Chain: Decoupling refers to the process of breaking the links in the customer value chain by identifying weak points in established companies. This disruption can occur through: 1. Decoupling by value creating Twitch revolutionized the video game industry by creating a platform where users can watch and interact with players. Instead of focusing on the act of playing games, Twitch emphasized watching and learning from others, adding entertainment and educational value. 2. Decoupling by value eroding In traditional process of playing video games, the consumer had to go to video game store to buy or rent the game and then play the game. This is a value eroding activity as it frustrates the consumer. Hence, Steam solves the problem of traditional buying and renting video games by providing a streaming platform of online games for consumers to play. 3. Decoupling by value capturing The freemium model, as seen with Fortnite, allows users to play games for free on mobile devices. Once engaged, users can choose to purchase the game or buy virtual items, effectively capturing value that would otherwise be eroded through upfront costs. Coupling in the Customer Value Chain Coupling involves adding more activities to the decoupled customer value chain to create new opportunities and experiences. For eg - Uber disrupted the ride hailing industry by focusing on meeting the supply and demand of drivers and riders on a single platform. In terms of coupling, Uber has expanded to Uber food delivery and Uber package delivery to create more value added services to customers. Now when coming to Generative AI, where startups and founders need to identify customer value chain activities which currently makes the customer unhappy and by solving these problems one can create value to customers and to business by providing solutions that are cheaper, faster and easier.
