Do You Know What Will Prevent Your Best Performers From Hopping? As I mentioned, I've left some jobs for reasons that had nothing to do with more money. Whether it was relocation, a desire to travel, a need to travel less, or the desire to work remotely, the one thing those changes had in common was that they were specific to my situation and preferences.  The other thing they had in common was that the place I was leaving did not have the flexibility to offer me what I wanted. Could the role have centered on doing more online training so I could travel less? Could a little remote work availability have kept me there longer? Could a fully remote position have allowed me to continue working and relocate?  We'll never know because that wasn't offered. You will slack off if you work from home. This is what my friend's boss said to him after asking to work from home for a week due to being sick. 😷 My friend has been working with this company for 2 years and has been a top performer. He has not taken a single day off, has handed his work in on time, aced all his projects, and has actively taken the initiative to streamline company success. Not once has he shown the signs of an employee who 'Slacks off' and yet this is the response he gets for asking for some empathy. 😔 In short: -The boss directly conveyed his distrust towards his employees. -It showed my friend that his employer truly doesn't care about his employees' health and well-being. -Is stubborn and unwilling to accommodate anyone, no matter the circumstances. -And will never change with time and people. 🤮 Employers need to understand that this stagnant, unempathetic and backward thought process is what will cause talented and capable employees to never end up staying with your company. You too will have to settle for mediocre employees who are unfit for the role and will actually slack off because they do not see any value in working for you. You get what you give. 🤝 Why do you think 'Work from home' is still condemned by so many employers even today?

Navigating the Resume Gap: The Remote Work Reversal Caught in the remote work tug-of-war? How broken promises and forced returns are jeopardizing more than just jobs. A resume gap is something I always address during conversations about career aspirations and when evaluating the fit for the roles I work on. I always want to make sure my clients have the full picture of someone’s career path. Over the past 15 years whenever I see gaps in…… 2008 (housing market collapse) 2010 (recession) 2020 (pandemic) I rarely if ever spend much time on the circumstances in these time periods……I was recruiting through each unique event. I already know what happened. I was living it myself! Since the start of 2024 there is a new trend I’ve seen develop that will create another common resume gap…..and the trend is clear. Remote work promises made but now office returns demanded. Be it a policy pivot, or corporate shift. Promises have been broken and workers left adrift. So many seem to be caught in the crossfire. Now navigating this new dynamic after making MAJOR life decisions based on what turned out to be poor communication at best……. Or a lie at worst. This isn’t just about a job change. This is another unique event that shouldn’t count as a job change. For anyone obsessed with short term tenures or “job hopping” 2024’s trend of people losing a job because they won’t return to office ………because the commute is 80 miles – one way ………because they moved to another city when they were told remote work was permanent policy ……..because they never would have accepted the job in the first place if it was in the office full time That is not a “job hopper”, these are people caught in a circumstance as unique as sub-prime mortgage collapsing or a global pandemic and should be treated as such. 4 months ago: I got my dream job that allowed me to work from home. 1 year ago: I was 5000 miles away from home with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Here's how I accomplished my dream of working from home in 12 months ↓ When I was 17 I decided that when I got into the working world... I wanted to work remotely. (Not because I hate people😂) Because it allowed me to: - Not be tied to a location. - No miserable commute home. - Travel to places without taking time off. Truthfully, it suits me perfectly. But just 1 year ago I had no idea... - What I wanted to do. - How I was going to do it. - How long it was going to take. I was completely lost. But one day I decided to make a change. And I dedicated the next year of my life to: - Finding & targeting a dream job. - Working daily to improve my skills. - Spending as long as it took to be reach my goal. And after 1 year of focusing on the outcome of finding my dream job... I got a job that allowed me to: - Work from home. - Gave me the freedom I wanted. - Work with some of the best minds in the industry. Truthfully, it doesn't even feel like work. It just goes to show if you set a goal and you: - Dedicate yourself to achieving it. - Stay consistent with the effort you put in. - Have no doubt in your mind that you will succeed. It's only a matter of time until you success comes your way!

Most of us have been conditioned to work a job that pays us for showing up. I’ve done it most of my life! There is nothing wrong with that! But, we’re in a crazy job market right now that is requiring us to stretch ourselves just to make ends meet. Everyone is looking for remote jobs with guaranteed salary, but many employers are moving away from remote work and are returning to the traditional, in-office work model. With there being fewer remote jobs, and more people wanting them, it’s much more difficult to land one of those jobs. The competition is fierce! So, if you don’t need the income, keep pushing and doing more interviews, and hopefully you find the job you’re looking for. Location, location, location... Important when buying a house. Just as important when considering a new job. Remote and hybrid work has changed the job landscape. People can access companies and jobs that previously were just too far away for them to even consider which is amazing. But there are still plenty of people and jobs that require them to be on-site full time. When considering a potential new job or as a hiring manager when you're considering a new hire, really consider the potential commute. A new job may only be a 10 mile commute, but is that 10 miles a 15 minute drive or 45 minutes of being stuck in traffic? There may be a bus stop 5 minutes away from the office, but do you have to take 3 busses to get there? These types of problems come up time and time again and is often a big reason why people move on from companies and look for something new. I hear "I just can't do the commute any more" or "I just want to be able to get home on time" all the time, mostly from people who love their job but the commute is causing over tiredness, stress and anxiety every day. So if you are hiring or looking for new work, really think about the real-world commute and if it is something you can manage with every day!

Working remotely can slow down your career growth. It's true. Yet, I would trade in a dozen promotions to be able to do what I could do today. After a work call, I walked over to the next room, to watch my baby sleeping peacefully. After a few minutes, she woke up, saw me there and smiled. She will be soon grow up and won't need me as much as she needs me now. Thats when I would probably go back to working from office to catchup on my 'lost' career growth. But right now, I am just happy to watch my baby sleep and feel grateful for the balance remote work allows. #remotework #career # growth
