Covering over 70% of our planet, the #oceans are home to diverse ecosystems, regulate our climate, and provide resources that sustain billions of people. The #MediterraneanSea, our focus area, is a unique and diverse marine ecosystem that needs our collective efforts to protect and preserve. Why should we care about our #oceans? 🌊 Biodiversity: The Mediterranean is home to an extraordinary variety of marine species, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. 🌊 Climate Regulation: Oceans absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide and heat, helping to regulate the Earth’s climate. 🌊 Economic Vitality: The Mediterranean supports millions of livelihoods through fishing, tourism, and trade. 🌊 Health: Oceans are a source of nutrition and have potential for medical discoveries that benefit humanity. Oceans sustain humanity and much of Earth's biodiversity. As major carbon sinks and economic drivers, they require careful management and awareness. To highlight their importance, the United Nations designated June 8 as World Oceans Day (WOD) in 2008. Initially declared at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, this day now encourages global action. This year’s theme, "Awaken New Depths," calls for deeper reflection on protecting and restoring oceans for a sustainable future. Oceans and their marine and coastal ecosystems face severe threats from pollution, acidification, overfishing, unregulated waste disposal, oil spills, ocean mining, rising sea levels, and climate change. These challenges lead to significant biodiversity loss. As stewards of the blue planet, we must support Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using ocean resources. Sustainable practices like regulated fishing, expanding marine protected areas, reducing waste, and initiatives like beach cleanups are essential for ocean health. #WorldOceansDay calls for renewed commitment and action to preserve our oceans and the life they sustain, urging everyone to recognise their fragility and treat them with care and respect. #VoiceforaSustainablePlanet #SankalaFoundation

📣 June 8 - World Oceans Day 💙🌊 This year's official theme is "Awakening New Depths" to raise awareness of the need to explore and better understand the deep ocean as there is still much to learn about this vast and complex ecosystem.🐬🐠 The slogan also calls for urgent action to protect the oceans from the threats they face, such as pollution, climate change and overfishing.🚫🌍 Did you know that...? • Oceans produce more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe.💨 • They absorb 25% of the carbon dioxide we produce.♻️ • They are home to incredible biodiversity, much of which is still undiscovered and all of which needs to be protected.🐋🌱 World Oceans Day was established in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro at the initiative of Canada. However, it was not until 2008 that the United Nations General Assembly designated June 8 as the date for this celebration. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year to raise awareness of the importance of the oceans to our planet and promote action to protect them. This year’s Planetary Health Check is a wake-up call for all of us. Six out of nine planetary boundaries have already been crossed, and ocean acidification is dangerously close to joining them.
