It’s encouraging to see that the Home Office will be trialling a 56-day move-on period for newly granted refugees. This extends the time they have to secure stable housing once notified of their eviction from asylum seeker accommodation. If successful, this could significantly reduce the number of people pushed into homelessness during the harshest months of the year. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that finding suitable accommodation in this climate is complicated and can take much longer than expected. We must continue pushing for comprehensive support and guidance throughout the 56-day period to ensure people’s safe transition to the next step of their journeys. #HousingForAll #NoOneLeftBehind #RefugeeRights #LongTermSolutions #HousingJustice

Please read this important piece.
Alexandra Flynn and I wrote this Maytree opinion to urge City Council to accept the report of the Toronto Ombudsman investigating refugee access to city shelters. The progressive realization of the right to adequate housing is not aspirational. It is a set of responsibilities, which the city agreed to and for which it is accountable. We believe that by acting upon the report, the City can signal its commitment to moving forward on its human rights obligations and commitment to the right to housing. https://lnkd.in/gcstagj4

Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID) should be an inclusive space where people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to thrive. That’s why the University of Glasgow and GRID are delighted to support the work of Central and West Integration Network to the tune of £4,475. The network supports asylum seekers, refugees, migrant workers, and Black and minority ethnic communities in Glasgow’s central and west areas. It works to support integration through a range of services, including ESOL classes, cultural activities, and community meals – with over 50 members joining the weekly community meal prepared by talented refugee chefs. If you want to find out more about the GRID Civic Grant Fund and who we have helped so far, see here: https://lnkd.in/ewpRD9NS #gridcivicfund #Innovation #InnovationDistricts #InclusiveInnovation

Refugees and immigrants across the U.S. are playing a vital role in reviving local economies and significantly contributing to tax revenue. In Pennsylvania alone, the immigrant community generated over $1.7 billion in revenue and increased spending power by $24 billion in 2019. With Pennsylvania becoming one of the states with a rapidly growing refugee population, it's clear that more needs to be done to support these communities. Despite this growth, PA still lacks an Office of New Americans. Yesterday, I had the honor of representing Refugee Civic Action alongside many fellow refugee leaders at an advocacy event organized by Church World Service in the PA Capitol. We lobbied for bipartisan support of HB 1630, which would establish an office dedicated to addressing the unique needs of refugees and new Americans. This is a crucial step toward ensuring more effective support and resources for these communities. #ImmigrantImpact #RefugeesWelcome #EconomicImpact #DiversityAndInclusion #ImmigrationReform
