We are starting to see the harsh realities of how mass deportation efforts impact families and there are good reasons to believe it’s going to get much worse. My heart is breaking. If you are aware of any organizations who are on the frontlines, fighting for basic human rights and dignities, please share a link.

What does “home” mean to you? For some, it’s a roof over their head. For others, it’s a feeling of safety, a community, or a memory of where it all began. In Episode 29 of Migrants with Migraines, Melissa Reyes and I dive deep into this question with our incredible guests from the New Jersey Consortium for Immigrant Children. Together, we reflect on what it means to create a home—especially when your journey starts thousands of miles away. We heard stories like that of Erika Martinez, who transformed fear into advocacy, fighting for financial aid and licenses for undocumented youth in New Jersey. And Angelica La Furno, who grew up in Queens, learned the beauty of holding two homes in one heart. Their experiences highlight a powerful truth: Home isn’t always a place. Sometimes, it’s the people who stand beside you, the opportunities you fight for, or the community you build. 🛠️ As NJCIC celebrates its 10th anniversary, we’re reminded of the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces for immigrant children navigating unimaginable challenges. So, what does “home” mean to you? Let’s redefine it together. ➡️ Tune into Episode 29 and discover how you can make New Jersey a home for all: https://lnkd.in/e8DqDK3y And if this resonates with you, let’s start the conversation in the comments. #RespectfulMaternalHealthcare is a fundamental human right. Women of reproductive age are entitled to dignified care pre, during and post childbirth. Women with disabilities deserve more of this care, inherently because of the challenges they are facing already #physically, #mentally, and #emotionally. Yet, during the #WhatWomenWant campaign done by #WhiteRibbonAllianceKenya one of the key issues that #womenwithdisabilities raised through the #asklistenact approach, was physical barriers like inaccessible beds and facilities, communication barriers, and stigma and discrimination from health workers. https://lnkd.in/dM63Cvgb Through this same approach, you will be shocked to discover that one of the challenges raised by the midwives in the #whatwomwnwant campaign, is lack of proper training to handle women with disabilities. This makes providing proper #respectfulmaternalcare hard. What must be done to improve this? You might ask. The solution as highlighted in the #silenttears: Voices of loss report https://lnkd.in/d2X4YhVw and #midwivesvoiceskenya report https://lnkd.in/dNkP_WZ7 women with disabilities need more than medical needs, they require recognition and upholding of their human rights. The Government, health workers, the community, and the women by promoting and practicing selfcare should work on providing accessible, dignified, and equitable maternal healthcare that ensures women with disabilities receive the care and support they deserve, fostering healthier pregnancies, better maternal outcomes, and stronger families. By adopting an inclusive approach to maternal care, healthcare systems can take significant strides toward a more just and equitable society for all.
