AN OPPORTUNITY MISUNDERSTOOD. The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. In my previous post, I talked about “Why Community Participation is Crucial for Successful Projects.” In this post, I want to discuss “Enhanced Relevance and Effectiveness in Sustainable Community Projects.” From my experience working with community leaders, I have found that involving community members in planning a new clean water supply system has proven to be a game-changer. By ensuring that the services offered align perfectly with the community’s needs, we have seen a significant increase in usage and maintenance. This approach not only guarantees that the system is well-kept but also generates revenues that are reinvested into other community projects. Importantly, this model reduces dependency on external funding, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability within the community. Please share your experiences and comments below.

👷 Reviving Empty Spaces in Scotland’s Towns 🏘️ Next week, the Scotland’s Towns Conference in Perth will highlight the inspiring work underway to transform vacant and derelict buildings across Perth and Kinross. From creating affordable housing and community spaces, to reviving iconic sites like Perth Museum, the Vacant and Eyesore Property Taskforce is leading the way in turning eyesores into assets. These projects are improving local economies, boosting community pride, and showing what’s possible when councils, businesses, and communities work together. At the conference, Councillor Grant Laing and Tom Arthur MSP will highlight how these initiatives can serve as a model for inspiring nationwide action.
