The Albanese Government is strengthening the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector. As part of this, the Government announced in May that it would set limits on the number of international students that can be enrolled by international education providers. ▪️ Today the Government has announced that, subject to the passage of legislation before the Parliament, it will set a National Planning Level (NPL) for new international student commencements of 270,000 for calendar year 2025. ▪️ For publicly funded universities, the managed growth approach, in aggregate, will result in around 145,000 new international student commencements in 2025, which is around 2023 levels. ▪️ For other universities and for non-university higher education providers, in aggregate, their new international student commencements in 2025 will be around 30,000. #NewstedGlobal #studyinAustralia #StudentvisaAustralia #subclass500 #InternationalStudents #EducationAgent

First of all, fair play to Northern Consortium for its report updating numbers giving a longitudinal view of its pathways. My blog at https://lnkd.in/gpx2mNvT gives the longer term perspective. A few things to say about the new report: 1. It's not really indicative of the overall pathway system. NCUK programmes, certainly for the UK, are atypical in not being delivered on the university campus students progress to. One would imagine that a pathway on campus has many attractions to an international student. 2. As noted in the launch webinar there is a paucity of information about students progressing to degree level study in the UK from pathways. It seems illogical for the sector to gripe about the government using visa applications as a proxy for international student numbers when, on this issue and broader international enrollment data, it doesn't get its own house in order. It's in the gift of UK universities to provide up to date, granular enrollment information (including applications to actual bums on seats) within, say, three months of term start dates. 3. The comparative degree performance of International Year One and Foundation Year NCUK students is perplexing. The report says IY1 do much better on degree outcomes. Could it be that universities are terrible at supporting direct entry (including entry from a Foundation course) students? Or do more IY1 students drop out before completing so the numbers are skewed? Of course, if an IY1 route on campus was open to domestic students it would be much fairer and one might expect (from the NCUK evidence) even better degree outcomes. But then universities and their commercial partners would not get the international fee income would they... #intled #internationalstudents #internationalstudentrecruitment #pathways #ukuniversities #usuniversities #australianuniversities

Pleased to see my book describing the parallel societies of international students, now out in paperback. This book was a passion project written during COVID, and explains how international student parallel societies were critical in providing comfort to students during a time of crisis. The book also acknowledges that parallel societies do disconnect students in some ways from the host nation, but also explains what pushes international students into communities of people based on similar experiences and needs. #internationalstudents #internationaleducation #Australia #parallel #societies #covid #crisis #connections #disconnections https://lnkd.in/grsNT5ZK

The Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) kicked off in Melbourne yesterday, and international student caps are high on the agenda. Nous principal Zac Ashkanasy is speaking at the conference today and tomorrow. Writing with Studyportals CEO Edwin van Rest on the Nous website today, he says those caps have indeed had the chilling effect on international enrolments that many people feared they might. Pageviews on Studyportals websites, which have a high correlation with actual enrolments, have plummeted since caps entered the public discourse. Pageview data now suggests that a majority of students currently considering GO8 universities will look abroad in the event that they are unable to enrol in those schools. Luckily, Zac has a few ideas for those universities hoping to weather the storm. Read more at https://lnkd.in/gSZNkDFP #highereducation #highered #internationalcaps #aiec2024
