Daily Dollop of Wallop #57 Well that's London Wine Fair done for another year. Granted, I only attended on the Monday and Tuesday, but still, I came, I saw and I left. At this point, I would love to know what you thought of it. Context being on the purpose of your visit; if it was just to meet some producers and have some meetings, then I guess it was just a batch of meetings that 'happened' to be situated at the London Wine Fair. For those that went purely to look, smell, taste, seek and discover then you may well have had the most amazing of experiences. If, like me, you attended for both of the above then I wonder how it went for you? For me, it was spot on for meeting up with colleagues in the trade. A chance to chew the fat, talk about change, innovation, education and all that jazz. I tried a few new bits and pieces which was an eye opening experience. Particularly the wines from Japan, Greece and Ukraine. It is always a hot ticket (not literally) to go and see the peeps on WineGB as you know full well you are going to taste some naughty bits of kit and meet the most amazingly passionate people. I wasn't disappointed there. However, what I found the most interesting was the quality and mix of seminars, talks, panel debates and masterclasses. This is an area where I think, as a trade we have not been anywhere near where we should be. The Harpers 30 under 30 was brilliant to see, for example. The emergence of new talent is clear to see and bodes well for future ideas and plans. My big question though is if there is room to make the London Wine Fair a blended experience of both consumer and trade? A week long event perhaps that caters for the trade and then a 2 day 'experience led' period where it is ticketed (opportunity for stands/venue to make some money back) and also the opportunity for consumers to taste what the trade has already tasted - thus the market research and testing is being done for them, directly after the trade show. Food for thought and something I believe, with the right brains could be a bit of a game changer. Leverage your beverage.

I WANT TO CHANGE JOB! 😳 ---- No, that's not actually true... But it was the first ironic thought that crossed my mind yesterday morning when my alarm started ringing at 5 am,  giving me a couple more hours to review before taking my D1 exam for the West Diploma course at the WSET School London Wine & Spirit Education Trust It often happens to me, particularly when I'm about to tackle something challenging,  that I find myself in a state of panic at the very last minute,  questioning WHY I've put myself in such a situation. Whether it's before an exam I've chosen to take, standing at the starting line of a full marathon,  or preparing a speech to a large audience,  this feeling is familiar! I am confident that my exam went quite well. I was comfortable with all the topics that were asked  and made as many connections between information and facts as possible. If yesterday morning's feeling was that the wine business might be too much for me,  or that the level of success I aspire to might be out of reach, today, after a good night's sleep and a strong coffee, I feel differently. I want to become the best professional I CAN BE in the wine business. Stepping out of your comfort zone is an incredibly powerful way to empower yourself and broaden your perspectives. We should each aim to personally achieve a small, challenging goal at least once a week,  as Francesca Becucci - my study partner in this journey, rightly suggested me yesterday. 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐔̈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐅 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 In the next few days it's time for ProWein 2024; a 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for the fair which has been the undisputed leader of international wine fairs for years and which today must redeem itself, given the under-performing 2023 edition. According to many, in fact, 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 could become the new main international wine fair, thus replacing ProWein in Düsseldorf. The latter would consequently return to being mainly a fair for the 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 and would act as a privileged meeting point for numerous markets in Northern and Eastern Europe. The German fair will be held from 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟐 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 and will once again see 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 as the protagonist, with over 1,190 registered exhibitors, although down compared to previous editions; followed by France (743) and Germany (708). Does an Event Manager ever stop being an Event Manager, even on vacation? I can't help but stop when I see an outdoor event being organized – I have to approach, check what's happening, and see how it's being done. While on a catamaran, I talk to the captain about what possibilities he can offer his clients and what kind of event he could organize for them. During a wine tasting at a splendid winery, I envision an exclusive car launch or another product premiere held in the late afternoon, accompanied by excellent wine. Is this a professional quirk? No, it's just that I love what I do. I observe what others are doing with great interest and share my ideas with undisguised pleasure.
