Current’s Great Lakes ReNEW just won a highly competitive NSF Engine Award, for up to $160 million over 10 years for developing a water economy powerhouse! This is truly thrilling, and honestly a dream come true - though just another step forward toward a Big Vision. A few things: 1) Water is a big deal. This award shows how fundamental water is to society, to climate, to the economy: 5 of the 10 NSF Engines Awardees have water as a topic (though Current’s is the only one specialized on water). 2) Current beat out a ton of really strong, well-funded proposals. It won by choosing an incredibly relevant topic (water), by developing an outstanding proposal with bottoms-up plans, having a broad and committed consortium, and having incredible leadership powered by Alaina Harkness and Junhong Chen. Hard work by awesome people on the right topic wins! 3) This is one more step forward of what is a big journey started with a vision. My thoughts go back to the founding of Current and the vision of an incredible group of people whose foundational contributions now are less visible: Rahm Emanuel, Steven Koch, World Business Chicago, Jeff Malehorn, Seth Snyder, Thru Shivakumar, Lindsay Broughel, David St Pierre, and several others. And also to Venkat Atluri, the board of Current, and the outstanding team that made this happen. THANK YOU! Water is a big deal. The global spend on water is now > $1T/yr. Per the World Wildlife Fund, the economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems is $58 trillion/yr, or 60% of global GDP! Crazy important. Water is life. Water is climate. Water is the fundamental molecule.

I very much enjoyed being a part of these important converations - particularly exploring how to include equity in resource planning.
Panel after panel after panel of experts and industry practioners... I wish I could travel back in time and relive EPRI's 42nd Annual Seminar on Resource Planning for Electric Power Systems that just wrapped up last week in DC. A wonderfully engaging and thought provoking set of discussions on the impact of new and emerging governmental policy on electric company planning, bridging the gap between long term planning and resource procurement and deployment, and incorporating social vulnerability and environmental justice into electric company planning processes. There are critical reseach gaps in each of these areas, but also tremendous opportunity to address them by working collaboratively. We heard about the need to combine analytical skills from different disciplines, consider new metrics for measuring sucess, and admit that the people and process challenge is just as big as the math challenge when it comes to planning for long term power system decarbonization. And we saw real applications of these approaches in progress. Thank you to all our amazing speakers, session chairs, and participants! We are thrilled to announce that our team (PI: Ayat Al Assi; co-PIs: Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol Friedland, Md Adilur Rahim, Kevin T. Smiley) has been awarded a grant from The RESTORE Act Center of Excellence for Louisiana! This project aims to incorporate wind risk assessment and risk reduction through advanced building code practices into the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan. Our initiative will explore how social equity factors impact individuals' direct economic experiences from wind events. Moreover, we will assess the effectiveness of enhanced building code practices in reducing wind risk. Our goal is ambitious: to create a comprehensive library of wind-risk metrics to support resilience efforts in Coastal Louisiana. This research isn't just about understanding the dynamics of wind—it's about making a lasting impact on our communities through informed, equitable policy-making.
