When it comes to trauma, it's not about getting over it or moving on as if it never happened. Instead, it's about acknowledging its presence and making space for it within ourselves. Trauma becomes a part of our story, shaping who we are, but it doesn't define us entirely. By accepting and integrating it into our lives, we create a new narrative—one that includes resilience, growth, and healing. In an extreme example, a mother who loses a child should never be expected to “move on”. In every case, she will carry this loss to her own grave. However, if she uses therapy, support groups, self-care, creativity, and finds purpose in accepting the pain and expressing her feelings, she might find meaning in honoring her child's memory by carrying on without them physically present. She learns to channel her grief into meaningful actions or projects that bring purpose and connection to her life. She might do this specifically becuase she knows her child would want her to do this. In general, the process of moving through trauma involves honoring our experiences, allowing ourselves to feel and express emotions, and seeking support when needed. Rather than trying to erase the past, we learn to coexist with it, recognizing its impact while empowering ourselves to move forward with strength and courage.
