Interesting blog from &Wider with Sustainable Links on compliance versus long term sustainability thinking - "The compliance-first route entails following a path focused on creating as little effort as possible in reaction to outside pressure... [resulting] in creating expensive parallel processes to follow each new regulation individually and that do not align with business operations or decision-making." Our core aim is to lead business beyond compliance. As Lea Esterhuizen and Gwendolyn Remmert note, the supposedly easier compliance-only route can really result in higher costs down the line, and unintended consequences, including reputational risk. Though legislation can and does offer a solid foundation, it's important to build beyond a reactionary approach towards a more carefully considered action plan, both for risk avoidance and mitigation. Yesterday Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) launched, in collaboration with United Nations Global Compact, an updated online database, Business reporting on the SDGs: An analysis of the Goals and Targets.   This database comprises a comprehensive inventory of potential disclosures at the targets level for each of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on globally accepted frameworks and standards already used by companies.
