Supporting African filmmakers 🎥 We’re creating better visibility for Africa's creative talents on the international scene by partnering with the renowned Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) on its World Cinema Fund initiative. Our TUI Colourful Cultures programme supports the World Cinema Fund, offering an annual award that provides financial assistance to outstanding film projects. 🎬 According to UNESCO, Africa's film industry has the potential to generate over 20 million jobs and add US$20 billion to the continent's GDP. Despite this potential, African filmmakers face significant challenges due to underdeveloped infrastructure, lack of funding and policy support. Through the creation of an annual TUI Care Foundation award over the next three years, film projects from twelve African nations are eligible to receive financial backing to help bring their visions to life. And we already have a winner this year! The jury of the World Cinema Fund has decided in favour of the project “Benimana“, directed by Rwandan filmmaker Marie Clementine Dusabejambo. The feature film follows Veneranda, a survivor of the Tutsi genocide, working for reconciliation. Learn more through the link in the comments 👇

Bosnia and Herzegovina's film industry, once successful in Yugoslavia, faces major challenges today due to the consequences of the war, lack of funding and weak incentives for domestic and foreign productions. Although there are exceptional successes such as Jasmila Žbanić and the Sarajevo Film Festival, Bosnia and Herzegovina produces less than five feature films a year, while the audience mostly prefers foreign titles. 🎞️ https://lnkd.in/d8ZMUzvZ #PCRCBiH #BalkanDiskurs

Cinematic storytelling holds a mirror to our society, but many filmmakers in the MENA region face unique challenges. For Palestinian creators, navigating the complexities of identity and representation is crucial. 🎬✨ Embracing a collaborative spirit can be the answer. For instance, the establishment of the Palestine Film Unit in the late 1960s united various filmmakers under a common goal: portraying the Palestinian narrative authentically and powerfully. This initiative led to a surge in films addressing the Palestinian experience, culminating in works that gained international recognition and awards. Take the film "Paradise Now" by Hany Abu-Assad, which explores the lives of two Palestinian men contemplating a suicide mission. This film not only highlights personal struggles but also sparked significant discussions worldwide about identity and resistance—a testament to the power of collaboration in filmmaking. 🕊️ To those in the industry, building partnerships with local and international stakeholders can enrich your creative journey. Attend film festivals, engage with cultural institutions, and share your vision! Your story matters, and together we can elevate the voices of our communities. Let’s forge new paths in cinema, honoring our rich heritage while inspiring future storytellers. 🌍🎥 #PalestinianCinema #FilmCommunity #CulturalStories #Storytelling #FilmProduction

#Orientalism is rooted in #racism and white supremacy culture. 🧞♀️ I was asked if I had a pet tiger like Jasmine as a child. I was flattered. Jasmine was beautiful, edgy, and unlike other Disney princesses in attitude. 🐯 Rawr. Little did I know that an "exotic" hyper-sexualized brand would follow me my whole life -- starting as young as seven years old. And that's a relatively milder form of racism that I've been somewhat lucky to experience as a fetishized woman of color swimming in a sea of #racist tropes targeting all those "othered" from the parameters of #whiteness. To take back the reigns in storytelling and control our narratives is empowering. The #Hollywood machine has served primarily as a propaganda mouthpiece to serve state-sponsored agendas - parroting ignorant tropes that platform #antisemitism, #islamophobia, #xenophobia, and always centering the narratives of #colonizers and settler colonialists. This is, of course, no accident. That's where the big money has been made - through theft, genocide, and the violent expansion of empire. 💰 This cannot be achieved without the people's manufactured consent, which the U.S. media machine proudly and shamelessly churned content out to placate. I am SO here for the gradual decline of legacy media. 👏🏽 I am SO here for the disruption of networked traditional media gatekeepers. 👏🏽 I am SO here for the continued #Internet and #technological revolution to shake up establishment industries as we know them. 👏🏽 I am SO here for democratized #storytelling. 👏🏽 #freepalestine #arabamerican #internetculture #genzforchange #humanrights #antiracism #useyourvoice #bethechange
