It's H-E-B. 😙 💋 There's a BATTLE of the brands in my house with the Kroger social media team going after my husband and me, loyally committed to H-E-B. 👊 (So why my obsession with this random grocer?) For anyone not in Texas, allow me to introduce you to the store with a Texas-sized cult following and a bread-winning brand strategy. ⮑ Follow their example and see your brand get cleaned up in aisle one. 🧽 1. Tightly Targeted The H-E-B bio is “serving Texas since 1905.“ They chose a target audience and never looked back. - They partner with Texas farms. - Highlight Texas recipes. - Sell Texas-shaped tools. - Collaborate with Texas charities and small businesses. They made their brand obsessed with Texas, looking to attract Texans with the shared values of state pride. 🤠 And it works. Takeaway: Clarify your values to better target those with shared beliefs. 2. Brand Experience H-E-B starts the brand experience from a young age. As a child, you meet H-E-Buddy, the mascot. bit.ly/3yHlzzH You receive stickers, spin a wheel of prizes, and get your own little cart. 🛒 H-E-B puts that same thought into adult experiences. - Their stores have kitchen spaces where you can learn new recipes, try wines, and eat mini-meals. - They have restaurants inside their stores, and you can even walk around with drinks. https://bit.ly/3yzItcn - Their sub-brand Favor (think Uber Eats) was voted the most fun office in Austin, TX. https://bit.ly/3WSC6Ky Takeaway: Help your audience experience your brand through creative spaces, interactive displays, and thoughtful moments. 3. Goodness is baked into them. H-E-B didn't create a sustainability program for appearances. ⮑ Their business structure is designed to foster goodness. By focusing exclusively on Texas, H-E-B champions sustainability and promotes taking care of the state. They demonstrate the impact we can make by sourcing local. Texas wildlife and state parks are positively affected! Shoppers feel good knowing that local farms and the environment are improved from their purchases, and it's not just a marketing ploy. One Harsh Truth DASH learnt from their “Deliciously Wonky” Campaign... and why they’re DESTINED to become a Household brand (you simply NEED to know this) Most challenger brands are Champagne brands, targeting Champagne consumers, solving Champagne problems. Middle Class founder creates Middle Class Product in Middle Class Packaging for Middle Class People at Middle Class Price Point consumed in Middle Class Home (probably next to a AGA) (adjacent to black labby, Tilly) Champagne Shoppers: Waitrose, M&S, Whole Foods Market, Planet Organic Coco pop Shoppers: Sainsbury’s, Tesco, CoOp, Morrissons Champagne shoppers: do not give a single f*ck about price point. Coco pop Shoppers: are sensitive to price To become household, you must move from solving Champagne to Coco Pop problems DASH did this. “Deliciously Wonky”, an old campaign, was Champagne. So pithy. So good. I loved it. Recycling Wonky Veg is Champagne. It's a heavy lift for Coco Pop consumers (who don't live in our Challenger brand micro-ecosystem) "Finally a Drink to Feel Good About" is CoCo Pop. A very easy lift for Coco Pop shoppers. Even easier when positioned next to Coca-Cola. Too many brands get stuck trying solving Coco Pop problems, with Champagne language. Alas, they never become household.
