Fond memories of penning an article on the sports journey of Bhubaneswar in a book #Bhubaneswar75, as the city completed 75 years, last year. An effort to encapsulate the journey of Bhubaneswar in sports development, capturing key milestones, legends and turning points over 75 years through the eyes and memories of sports loving citizens, veteran players, sports administrators, sports journalists, and academia. Bhubaneswar, the new capital city of Odisha post-independence, mostly had sporadic community sports scattered in different parts of the city, apart from the traditional body building and indoor games of the old Bhubaneswar (Old Town) area, pursued by the servitors of Lord Lingaraj Temple. From football to cricket, athletics, hockey and chess, various sports disciplines evolved over the time while the city also witnessed ascendance, decline and resurgence of various sports disciplines over different periods. The sixties and early seventies saw the city immersed in football with its own football clubs and own popular football leagues. Though growing love for cricket almost brought curtains over club football and leagues in the late seventies, football glory made a comeback in Bhubaneswar with the sports hostel and advent of women’s football in 1992, when several Kho-Kho players from Bhubaneswar switched to professional football and went on to represent Indian National Women’s Football team in the late nineties and 2000s. The mid eighties also marked a sort of watershed moment in the sports journey of Bhubaneswar with increasing interest and fame for sports and sportspersons as vernacular newspapers started dedicated sports pages in daily newspapers, something unheard of earlier in Odisha. Odia daily Sambad started this trend of dedicated sports pages in Odia newspapers in 1984, which was soon replicated by other leading vernacular dailies over the next few years.
