Not long after Miami’s founding, it earned the moniker The Magic City for its ability to rapidly transform itself. But even for this constantly evolving urban center, the past several years have marked a new pace of change. Miami has become synonymous with growth and opportunity. Seemingly endless waves of new residents have relocated to Miami-Dade County from across the world. Businesses, investors, entrepreneurs, and immigrants have flocked to the area, drawn not by leisure pursuits but by the prospect of being at the epicenter of a dynamic business and cultural hub. Miami’s streets pulse with the talents and energy of a multicultural, cosmopolitan population. These attributes make Miami one of the best examples of the 21st Century American city. In Miami, opportunity, optimism, and tenacity have created a virtuous cycle. In January, the county’s unemployment stood at 1.4 percent—the lowest in the nation among counties with more than one million people. The city is considered one of the safest in the United States, with significant drops in crime over the past two years, and Miami’s urban school district is the top performer among the nation’s five largest districts. Today, Miami is on the cusp of cementing its status as a truly global city, on par with not just Dubai and Singapore but also London, Tokyo, and New York.
