Beauty appears often hard to define, as it may appear as something existing somewhere between the material and the intangible... like in situations where sometimes we can find ourselves admiring some objects designed in ways that seem to express an incredibly harmonious balance between form and function...straight lines and strength... Friedrich von Hayek, an economist whom I like very much, had suggested calling the market economy based on the mechanism of economic competition "catallaxy", that is, the way humans via their exchange relationships collaborate to form a well-functioning economy. Catallaxy is word derived from Greek, which approximately means something like this: to exchange and to become friend with someone else from a previous situation of enmity or indifference. Hayek makes it clear that each one of us needs everyone else, including those people who may appear very distant from us or unknown to us, like perhaps someone who makes a bolt in China so that one day we could buy it when we need it. That is, in a well-functioning economy we are all helpful (at least potentially) to each other...and, for this reason, in some ways we all are friends or have the potential to become friends. In other words, every time we interact in the market economy - whether as consumers or sellers - we have a chance to build a better, richer and more beautiful world. And it doesn't matter whether our market interactions are guided by personal interest or not: what counts is the behavior carried out by doing things that serve or could serve others.
