Anche colpa nostra - 2024 has turned out to be a tough year for luxury brands. Unfortunately, it’s not likely that 2025 will be much better. There are a myriad reasons for this, a slowdown in China, geopolitical uncertainty, a flailing consumer sentiment etc. But: Maybe the luxury brands themselves bear some responsibility, don’t you think? That’s certainly the opinion of Andrea Guerra, CEO of Prada Group. At the Altagamma conference in Milan, Guerra made a list of several “errors” that brands committed over the last years of exuberance. 1) Hefty price increases, entry prices included. 2) Creative directors that strayed away too far from the brand identity. 3) A lack of cost control that’s now evident in margin erosion. What's next for Supreme? Shares in V.F. Corporation (VFC) were up 14% yesterday with a continued upwards trend after the official news the US based apparel giant had sold off Supreme to Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica for $1.5 Billion. Supreme, known for their hyped streetwear collaborations & sneaker drops played a pivotal role in “hype” culture & resale in the pre-pandemic era of the twenty-tens. Although Supreme’s popularity still remains with its die hard followers, it’s clout on the streetwear & sneaker scene has slowed down in recent years with resale products that would have traditionally sold for thousands still sitting on the various global resale platforms. Snapping up the streetwear stalwart for VF Corporation seemed like the right move back in 2020, sitting alongside other iconic streetwear brands such as Vans, Timberland & The North Face, which Supreme had already collaborated with on numerous occasions. However, 4 years later and the move didn’t meet VF’s original expectations with a falling demand for Supreme’s red box logo and shares prices in VF dropping 13%. https://lnkd.in/eQsa6Y27

Mystery Mogul - One of the biggest success stories in Italian fashion over the last decade has been New Guards Group. The Milan streetwear platform rose to prominence thanks to brands such as OffWhite Co. and Palm Angels and was acquired by FARFETCH in 2019. (Since then, the trend has turned. The current situation seems to be difficult.) NGG was founded by a Claudio Antonioli, Marcelo Burlon and Davide De Giglio. The three men complemented each other perfectly. Claudio, owner of ANTONIOLI GROUP, is the retail and distribution expert. Marcelo is a marketing genius and knows everyone who’s someone. Davide is the production wizard. Whereas Claudio and Marcelo talk to the press, Davide keeps a low profile. Because he stays behind the scenes, The Business of Fashion once called him the “Mystery Mogul”. Now Davide has revealed that he has acquired a majority stake in the label of designer Umit Benan. His plans? A secret for now, but Angela Tovazzi has pieced together the main facts in a story for FASHION Magazine.
