Founders and operators ask us all the time how advisors should be compensated. The reality is, we’ve been using old and generalized data for too long. We needed fresh data that indexes for company stage and operator experience levels. We also needed to understand what an advisor should make per year they work with a company. Old benchmarks said x% but didn’t specify whether that was over one, two, or more years (and many agreements have no vesting terms and no clarity on how long the advisor is on the hook to work with the company). Advisors are paid drastically differently based on their negotiating abilities and far too many people give their time away for free. This year, General Catalyst launched a survey to meet the demand for current advisor compensation data. Key takeaways include: 💡 76% of advisors are compensated exclusively through equity. 💡 Nearly 60% feature two year vesting periods; over 60% have < 3 month cliffs. 💡 Median grant size across stages is 0.1% on an annualized basis, varying greatly by stage. 💡 93% have formal, written agreements.
