The markets are closed today in honor of Juneteenth. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. ISG, along with the entire United States Department of Defense, recognizes June 19, 2024 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the commemoration and recognition of the end of African American slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation had officially freed enslaved people more than two years prior, it wasn’t until the end of the Civil War that Union troops had the full strength to enforce General Order No. 3 in the once Confederate states, such as Texas. When U.S. Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, after the U.S. Civil War to issue General Order No. 3 and secure the Union Army's authority over Texas, he spoke not just of freedom but "an absolute equality of personal rights" for all former slaves. The emancipation of enslaved Black Americans was not the end of our work to deliver on the promise of equality — it was only the beginning. On Juneteenth, we recommit to our shared work to ensure racial justice, equity, and equality in America. #DSCA #ISG #DSCU #securitycooperation #departmentofdefense #juneteenth #juneteenth2024

The 4th of July is a time not only for fireworks and barbecues but for deep reflection on the freedoms we enjoy. From the perspective of a Marine, this day resonates with a profound sense of duty and pride. It's a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us, ensuring our ability to live freely and uphold the ideals on which our great nation was founded. Let's honor this day by remembering the courage, commitment, and camaraderie of United States Service Members and Veterans. Every burst of fireworks in the sky reminds us of the fiery spirit of those who fought and continue to fight for our liberty.
