This is huge, and could potentially send shock waves through the admissions policies of elite institutions across the United States. The real question is what pressures now on the Governors and state legislatures of East Coast states to act (in particular, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut) where all of the Ivy League schools are based, and where "legacies" can account for more than 13-14% of intake at Stanford and USC. Institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have long given preference to children of trustees and major donors to the institutions. Lots of questions for us to consider as this plays through higher education. What unintentional consequences might we foresee in the otherwise noble drive for a level playing field?

Today, the California Assembly Concurrent Resolution 147 (ACR 147) will be heard at the California Senate Education Committee. This resolution, introduced by Assemblymember David Alvarez, establishes California’s First-Generation College Celebration Day. MANA de San Diego is proud to be a sponsor of this resolution. This resolution designates November 8, 2024, as “California’s First-Generation College Celebration Day.” The measure would urge all higher education institutions in the state to celebrate California’s First-Generation College Celebration Day, recognize the significant role of first-generation college students in developing the state’s future workforce, celebrate the federal Higher Education Act of 1965, and support first-generation college students with opportunities and equity in completing their desired degree programs. On of the five areas of the social determinants of health is access to quality education, from as young as preschool to postsecondary education. When people have access to quality education and have opportunity to access higher education, they are less apt to have chronic illnesses and medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, MIs, strokes) because they have access to jobs with increased compensation and excellent benefits (health insurance, PTO). Unfortuately, if you are from a lower SES or even with a disability you are less likely to have these opportunities. My doctoral project was rooted in this topic specifically focusing on students with disabilities. Add the trend of students from the Northeast looking to go to schools in the South to the already shrinking pool of students in the Northeast. "Mirroring a migration of Northern workers to low-tax states in the South, students from New York, New Jersey and New England are now also heading to Southern colleges — seeking warmer weather, cheaper tuition and a more relaxed atmosphere at a time many campuses have become political battlegrounds.
