In Europe, blackcurrant is a beloved flavor, the star ingredient in jellies, drinks, candy, and much more. But in the U.S., many people have never tasted the sweet-tart fruits. That’s not because they aren't delicious — it's because they can be deadly, at least if you’re a white pine tree. In the 19th century, plant pathologists discovered that blackcurrants spread a fungus that kills white pine trees, which were then a cornerstone of the U.S. timber industry. By the 1910s, Congress had banned the commercial cultivation of blackcurrants and sought to eradicate the berries. In Europe, the reverse happened — white pines were less important than blackcurrant crops, so the trees were sacrificed to protect the fruits. These days, blackcurrant rules are left up to the individual states, many of which have begun cultivating the dark, vitamin C-rich fruits once again. 🌟 Vine and Tree Fruits Market Update 🌟 🍇 Despite this stability of the vine crop, the average export price has surged to $2,314 per metric ton, up from $1,696 last year. 🍑 New crop prices for apricots are expected to stabilise within 7-10 days, with large-sized products abundant but medium-sized items in shorter supply. ☀️ Quality issues, particularly with figs from low-altitude areas, are emerging due to hot weather, which could impact availability and overall quality in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates as the harvest progresses: https://lnkd.in/eTkC2_Tb #chelmerfoods #driedfruits #nuts #seeds #pulses #vinefruits #treefruits

CEO & Co-Founder Producers Trust. Pioneering Regenerative Landscapes: Working at the intersection of Food Security, Sustainability, Farmer Wellbeing, Data Systems and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships.
This is cassava. Also known as yuca, manioc and manihot (if there is another name in your country please comment). Cassava has been cultivated by both indigenous and settlers across the topical Americas from Brazil to the Caribbean, Mexico and in between as a food staple. Boiled, fried, stewed, dried, powdered, etc there are endless ways to prepare this crop which is rather bland on its own, but has the ability to absorb lots of flavor. You aren’t likely to find cassava on the commodity exchange or sold by leading commodity traders. However it is a critical crop in many tropical landscapes in the Americas and globally. It can grow in poor soil, is drought tolerant and can provide an incredible quantity of carbs and starch with minimal labor required. This is a food security crop. Its cultivation and consumption is what keeps millions of people fed and alive. When industrial supply chains have a singular focus on commodities we forget that it’s actually the local crops, like cassava, that is of critical importance to the farm workers and local communities. Providing incentivizes and market connections locally to crops like cassava is part of a landscape approach that can both assist farmers in diversifying revenue streams while strengthening local economies and resilience. The future of supply chain development and commodity trading is a landscape approach that considers the well being of farmers and their communities at the heart of supply chain strategies. This is a photo from a farm visit in Panama years ago. I harvested the cassava from a small farm managed by farm workers at a large Caribbean cattle plantation.

bitter melon, also known as bitter melon, is a familiar fruit in the meals of many families, especially in rural areas. In the harvest season, bitter melons with a rough outer shell with sharp thorns, are a typical image of a country garden. When the harvest season comes, the farmers start picking the fruit to bring to the market to sell. Bitter melon usually has a dark green skin, a rough surface with small thorns evenly distributed throughout the fruit. To harvest, the farmer must be careful, avoiding the sharp thorns from hurting his hands. After harvesting, the bitter melon is neatly packed into baskets, ready to be brought to the market. At the market, bitter melons are sold in large piles, attracting the attention of shoppers. With a rough, prickly skin, this fruit is popular with many people because of its nutritional and medicinal value. Although it doesn't look as eye-catching as many other fruits, bitter melon still has a special appeal because of its unique bitter taste and health benefits. The bitter melon harvest days not only bring joy to farmers when they see the fruits of their labor, but also help them earn more income from selling these valuable melons. The sight of trucks full of bitter melons moving from the field to the market is a familiar and idyllic image, associated with life in the countryside.

Where can I grow my potatoes? 🥔Potatoes will grow on most soils, organic as well as mineral ones. 🥔However, the soil should be light and have medium texture. This allow #mechanical harvesting ,and helps avoid difficulties in harvesting when weather conditions are adverse at harvest time. Lowest possible soil #pH is 5.5. 🥔Too alkaline conditions can adversely affect skin quality and can induce #micronutrients deficiencies.
