Before you can change the game, you have to prove you can play it I’ve talked before about the importance of going beyond the job description in order to make an impact, but there’s something I left out that's even more critical than that: Before you can go beyond, you have to nail what’s in front of you. Earlier in my career when I was being "shown around" in a new Sr. Financial Analyst role, I immediately had loads of ideas for improving processes, streamlining workflows, and making things more efficient. But I kept that to myself, because here’s the thing: Nobody likes the person who comes in and acts like they have all the answers—especially when they haven’t even proven they can do the job they were hired to do. There’s a balance between bringing fresh ideas and respecting the system already in place. The truth is you have to earn the right to be listened to, and that comes from doing your job first. Understanding the way things work, building credibility, and showing that you can deliver results. Only then will your brilliant suggestions and ideas carry real weight. There are few faster ways to get off on the wrong foot in a new role, so don't do that. Instead, do the job, learn it good, and earn the cred to speak, but let your actions do the talking. What about you? Have you seen this happen in the workplace? How did it turn out?
