What do making a cup of coffee and creating a team have in common? Many factors are at play. First is the type of coffee you're making: espresso, doppio, moka, V60, cappuccino, latte, americano, ristretto... so starting with what you're brewing will help understand what kind of people are needed. Starting with the question: What am I doing? What end result am I aiming for? This will provide insights into what kind of team is needed. How does this apply to an existing team?

Toxic environments are generally created by leaders with deep insecurities and a lack of self-awareness. At any level of an organisation, the team leader sets the culture with their actions and the words they use every single day.    As team leaders, we have a fantastic opportunity to motivate and inspire our respective teams. My approach is rooted in empathy and trust, focusing on both the external environment and the interactions within my team.   I believe in listening carefully and assessing the unique qualities each of my team brings to the table. At QSI we are fostering and encouraging an environment that builds trust to a greater and more personal level than team members are used to, as well as giving them the opportunity for individual growth by significantly raising their own self-awareness. I encourage challenge both within the team and of myself. If team members are challenging me, or each other, effectively then they are naturally engaged in what is being said or proposed.   I am convinced that when you reach the end of your career and retire, you will look back and most of your greatest memories will involve the people you worked with rather than the brands or companies. My goal is that in 20 years’ time everyone working in QSI today will look back and say that was the best team I ever worked in!   https://lnkd.in/eaaKQKYR   #QualitySpiritsInternational #Winningteam

I worked alongside many teams who had personal objectives which seemed to run alongside the day job. Literally I would hear people say at a bigger weekly review "I've been working on my objectives this week". I could never understand this. Every year at the start of the fiscal year, I would get the team together. The whole team. The specific purpose of this meeting was for everybody in the team to 'show and tell' their personal objectives for the year. That way, everybody could see the cascade. Everybody could see the link to strategy. Everybody could see where others in the team may need help. Everybody could see how their work, and the collective team's work aligned. No matter the challenges. No matter the technical difficulties of the work to be undertaken. The team were aligned from the start. Thoughts and builds on how you have built alignment in your team? I love Chick-fil-A! Not only am I a fan of the chicken sandwich and waffle fries, but I love the system they have in the drive thru! If you have ever been through a Chick-fil-A drive through, you know they have it down to a science! It seems like the line just keeps moving. However, in the past few times I’ve been through the Chick-fil-A drive-thru, my order was not completely correct: it was missing sauces….or it was the wrong size….or there wasn’t a straw for the drink. My Chick-fil-A drive thru was very efficient in processing orders and getting people through; however, they were not effective in their process because the customer was not satisfied. It is easy for leaders and teams to get caught in doing things right….being efficient….having a system….and there is nothing wrong with that. However, we need to ensure that our systems…our processes….are not only streamlined, but that they are meeting or exceeding the needs of customer. Being effective is as important as being efficient. Ensuring that these work in concert with each other will lay a strong foundation for team success

Distraction will derail even the most gifted team. I'm a pretty good baker. During my early expat days, job opportunities and friends were few. I dove headlong into a Great British Bakeoff binge and mastered delicacies from homemade sprinkles to choux pastry. Despite those culinary feats, I managed to absolutely roast muffins this weekend. Why? Distraction. A team that doesn't have a clear image of what needs to get done, when it needs to be accomplished, and why cannot perform. Daily distractions and competing priorities will derail their efforts. Focus -- at the macro level, is essential to keep everyone rowing in the same direction. This helps each team member prioritize tasks. When everyone knows with clarity what they need to do each day, you can make real progress. What has been a time distraction derailed you?

"Conflicts are inevitable" Last week, I visited Copenhagen and had the opportunity to explore the Carlsberg home. In addition to learning about their famous beer 😃 , I discovered an intriguing chapter in its history. The founder of Carlsberg, J.C. Jacobsen, and his son, Carl Jacobsen, experienced a significant conflict that led to the creation of two separate breweries in 1882, turning them into competitors. Carl’s decision to start producing a beer with a shorter storage time was the reason for a conflict between the two men. I was thinking while coming back, when father and his single child can have the conflicts over business strategy then imagine boardroom. "Conflicts are inevitable" for professionals/thinkers. Its very much ok to have conflicts. However, the same is crucial for the evolution of any idea and ultimate value creation.
