If you want to attract world class talent start investing in often free tools to make the application process as engaging and exciting as the role sounds like is. CVs and cover letters are a display of intellectual laziness. You can do better than this no matter how small your company is.

Project of the Week! We recently ran across a Kumu project by Pierce Gordon which looks at youth unemployment in Botswana from a systems lens. https://lnkd.in/da8gEQeM From 30 different interviews, there were 154 separate forces identified having to do with youth unemployment in Botswana, categorized into: Demography, Home + Community, Individuals, Job Market / Microeconomy, Learning + Skills Physical Conditions, Policy and Regulations, Services, and Technology. The presentation Pierce created walks us through some of these categories and the connections between these forces, as well as provides some helpful introductory language into systems thinking. Especially valuable are the prompts for the people seeking to understand the visualization – as many of us in the systems and newtorking mapping field know, looking at a big systems map for the first time can sometimes be overwhelming! - Which forces influence which forces? How? - What larger patterns, or connections, emerge? - What issues / connections were intriguing? - What solutions would you offer to address the problems? - Which stakeholders should be activated/incentivized to address these problems?? I asked Ana (my Child Minder who at the time just relocated to Lagos from Jos)- ‘how much do you typically pay to get your hair braided?’ She said in Lagos, I sometimes pay 500 NGN or 1000 NGN for this style. Then I asked further, so how much do you pay in the North, Jos, and she said ‘free’. I remember a colleague turned friend narrated to me how his wife struggled for years to find a job in their home country, she went ahead to get a PHd in her field and a few months after she completed her PHd, I got the exciting news she got a job in another developer country that offers travel sponsorship for the entire family, her skill is in such high demand there. While skills have different value perception in different places, it’s important for us to horn our skills and place our skills in location or places where they are not only valued, but also in places where premium will be paid for them. There is a lot of deliberatedness required to hack this and this includes: 1. Being the very best you can be-hone those #skills zealously. 2. Understand places, industries or employers where your skills are in demand- a quick search on the internet or on job boards like indeed, #FlexJobs, #Chord, #LinkedIn jobs,#Zip Recruiter will be revelatory. 3. Identify the accompany soft skills to the core skills that will stand you out- could include exceptional #verbal or #written communication, negotiation, stakeholder engagement, etc… The related #job details from each of your job search will amplify them. The journey of meaningful success and career growth requires resilience, persistence and dedication. No matter what step or stage you are at on this journey, your persistence will yield and you will certainly hit a good break. Cheers in advance to that 🥂
