💐 THE ANSWER IS….Yes! It is often assumed that the design and construction of a city are inherently gender-neutral. Great article by Valeriya Safronova 👉The initial approach to gender mainstreaming in cities often relied on observed usage patterns and assumed gender-based needs, which were based on traditional assumptions about gender roles. I think that as cities are developing and others are redesigning themselves, or rebuilding, increasingly as planners and gender experts we will need to understand how #gender intersects with inequality, #women #mobility #economic disparities, and #climate changes. 👇 🌟At the same time, decision making processes should be simplified to enable #goverments, #civil society, #parliament and others needing to understand the intersectionality of these factors to create livable, innovative, #sustainable, #creative spaces, affordable #housing, and inclusive communities. Much of our transport planning infrastructure has been planned around 'peak hour' commuting to and from offices--trips more often taken by men, now even more of an anachronism following COVID teleworking. When I hear people talk about "gender inclusive" design, I always want specific examples. This article offers specific recommendations in urban design from Vienna: - Plant trees not bushes (trees provide shades and you can see through them) - Widen pavements (for strollers/prams, shopping) - Offer services within a short distance (to lighten a carer load) - Name streets after prominent women (it makes you look them up) https://lnkd.in/eFc5A-zg A fascinating read, but as always with gender -- being gender inclusive is not different to being *user-centered*. I've always been interested in feminist geography and the work of women such as Jane Jacobs, Caroline Criado Perez and Ayona Datta. Any other recommendations to read?

All women I've worked with, perform as well as their male colleagues, contribute with a different perspective, can multitask, pay attention to detail, care more for the individuals (I could continue on & on) and endure daily challenges of cultural habits that are intrinsic to male mindset! I like the intent of this article, but it's important to note that Universal Design doesn't always guarantee inclusivity. Designing with inclusivity means actively engaging with people who have lived experiences and will be using the space being designed. Consulting and involving professionals with expertise in human-centered design can also help move beyond cookie-cutter solutions. It's crucial to consider diverse perspectives and incorporate them into the design process for truly inclusive outcomes. So: 1. How do we incorporate emerging efforts related to inclusive design and building equity with traditional models of universal design? 2. Should future iterations of universal design aim to address race, gender, LGBTQ+ identity, as well as disability status and other personal identities? If so, how can this work be achieved? 3. What is the role of equity in past and future iterations of universal design?
