The concept of over-employment, where individuals juggle multiple full-time jobs simultaneously, (without informing their end-hirers), is steadily gaining traction within the contractor community. This approach offers the allure of increased income but also adds several ethical intricacies to the situation. One of the potential reasons for this shift is the escalating cost of living crisis has begun to cast a looming shadow, pushing individuals towards over-employment. As the cost of living continues to surge, many are driven to seek additional income streams in the quest for financial stability and security. This means individuals find themselves walking the tightrope of over-employment, taking on multiple full-time jobs to bridge the income gap. What are your thoughts on over-employment? #contractor #overemployment #news

Employer A has 20 part-time employees, each working a .5 FTE. Employer B has 10 full-time employees, each working a 1 FTE. What's the difference in BC? Employer A has a duty to maintain employment for applicable employees who go onto a claim. Employer B does not. This is the case even though both have 10 FTEs. The difference arises because WorkSafeBC does not take into account how much an employee is working in counting them towards the 20 employee threshold for the duty to apply. Part-time, full-time, all get counted the same. As WorkSafeBC explains: "All workers whose earnings must be reported to the Board for assessment purposes are included when determining the number of workers regularly employed." There are many factors that going into selecting between full and part-time employees. In 2024 onwards, crossing the 20 employee threshold should be one of them.

Have you wondered what the different employment labels really mean? Have a look at the below breakdown posted by Britney Theron Attorneys Inc which offers a simple explanation. Give the page a follow if you're interested in updates, tips, and information related to employment law.
When consulting with clients, we often come across a misunderstanding regarding employment status. Clients sometimes think that because they are working part-time, they are not deemed permanent, indefinite employees and may be dismissed without notice! This is not the case. Below is a helpful breakdown of the different labels used to refer to employees and what they generally mean. There can be overlaps between the horizontal line, but not the vertical line (i.e. you can be a full-time, fixed-term employee or a part-time, permanent/indefinite employee). The Plight of the Temp Worker If you've ever worked as a temporary employee or contractor at a major corporation, you know the feeling of being treated like an outcast or second-class citizen. Despite giving your blood, sweat, and tears to the company, temp workers routinely get the short end of the stick when it comes to recognition, benefits, and basic respect on the job. No matter how hard you work or how much you contribute to a company's success, as a temp you'll rarely get thanked, rewarded with bonuses, or included in team events and celebrations. You show up to the same office and do the same work as permanent employees, yet you're viewed as expendable and replaceable. Speak up about poor treatment or advocate for yourself, and you'll likely get threats about having your contract terminated. The company's touted "core values" about integrity, teamwork, and caring for employees conveniently don't seem to apply to temps. For many temporary workers, being a contractor or temp is their only chance to get a foot in the door and make ends meet. They may be immigrants or migrant workers struggling to find stable, permanent work. So they put in grueling hours and make extreme sacrifices, all while production soars for the corporation exploiting their desperation. But rather than being compensated accordingly, these workers continue being marginalized and mistreated. It's a shameful reality that big businesses are all too happy to look the other way when it comes to the poor treatment of temp employees. They know these workers have little recourse and will continue being overworked and underpaid out of necessity. Corporations proudly uphold their values selectively for permanent employees, while turning a blind eye to the rightful complaints and subpar working conditions of their unseen, temporary workforce. Temps are the unsung heroes keeping companies operational. It's long past time they get treated with the dignity, respect, and fair compensation they deserve as valued members of the team, not disposable outsiders. Their contributions are every bit as important, and it's hypocritical for corporations to keep benefiting from their labor while allowing this dynamic of mistreatment to persist.
