Balancing Heritage and Sustainability at the Barbican Estate. The Barbican Estate retrofit study was one of our very first projects at Love Design Studio, and it’s one that remains close to our hearts. It’s where our journey in sustainability consultancy began, and to make it even more special, we even did our team photoshoot there! "This project has left me wrestling with familiar frustrations about the frequent dominance of heritage concerns over energy efficiency. Yet, for once, I find myself questioning whether significant investments in retrofitting here are justifiable. The benefits may primarily serve the wealthier residents of the estate, prompting me to wonder whether such resources could make a greater impact if directed toward initiatives that address energy poverty or support those in greater need. At the same time, I think I’m being swayed by the sheer challenge of it all. If we can make a success of the Barbican, introducing efficiency measures that do not compromise the vibe and purpose of the estate, then we can prove to the world, and to any heritage lover, that if we can do it here, we can do it anywhere. And that, I believe, would be a truly powerful statement." In Palma De Mallorca, Illes Balears, Spain, a recently completed project, built from locally sourced sandstone, invites residents to congregate with their neighbors in a sustainable fashion. Using the sandstone as a thermal barrier, the facades of the building act to naturally cool the inside spaces, while strategic openings help navigate island breezes throughout the project to amplify the cooling effect. Beyond the locally quarried sandstone, the buildings use locally sourced dried Posidonia Oceanica leaves as insulation and dried timber trusses for ceiling frame work. This project goes beyond typical initiatives to create spaces that not only lower their carbon impact but create warm and inviting spaces for its inhabitants. We’re all in this together #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #sustainableconstruction #sustainablecities #sustainablebuilding #sustainability #locallysourced

🌳 The Urban Forest in the Rivercity — Plans for World’s Greenest Skyscraper 🏙️ As Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Olympics, Aria Property Group is taking bold strides to position the city as a global leader in sustainable architecture with plans for the "Urban Forest," a 30-storey residential skyscraper that aspires to be the world’s greenest building. 🔎 What You Need to Know: 1️⃣ A Vision for Sustainability: The Urban Forest project aims to integrate nature into urban living by featuring 827 trees and 27,000 plants throughout its structure. This ambitious design enhances the aesthetic appeal and promotes environmental sustainability, making Brisbane comparable to green heavyweights like Singapore. 2️⃣ Architectural Innovation: Designed by renowned architect Koichi Takada, the Urban Forest will celebrate Brisbane's sub-tropical climate while incorporating features that mimic the native Moreton Bay Fig Tree. The design emphasises timber and green spaces, targeting up to 200% of the site area covered by foliage. 3️⃣ A New Legacy: The Urban Forest is part of a broader initiative to create a legacy for Brisbane as it hosts the Olympics. Queensland Premier Steven Miles has pledged to prioritise greener and cleaner building materials, ensuring that the Olympic infrastructure contributes to sustainable development in the region. 🌟 As urban areas grapple with environmental challenges, the urban forest is a blueprint for future developments. Construction and real estate stakeholders must prioritise sustainability and innovation to create livable spaces harmonising with nature. 🔗 For more insights on how the Urban Forest plans to redefine sustainable living in Brisbane and set new standards for urban architecture, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gDXYyWCP 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can other cities learn from Brisbane's Urban Forest initiative to enhance sustainability in urban development? This is the future of real estate and development ▶️ Meet FIVE’s Plug-and-Play Net Zero design concept, The world’s first luxury-class net-zero tower design concept that’s garnering significant international attention as a true game changer. With 31 stories, this represents the tallest net-zero tower in the world, and boasts cutting-edge, first-in-class features: 🌿 Living Walls Spread over an area equivalent to 4.5 soccer fields, our green living walls are more than just aesthetic additions. They extract 69.5 MTCO2 per year, providing the tower's occupants with fresh, clean air, and reducing the structure’s carbon footprint through heat island effect mitigation. 💧 Water Cycle Water used within the tower enters a cycle where it is purified and re-circulated to irrigate the living walls. The creation of a self-sustained ecosystem within the structure saves precious natural resources, while ensuring an abundance of them. ☀️ Solar Façade 12,776 solar panels cover a total area that is the same as 5 soccer fields, harnessing clean and renewable energy to power the tower, and generating 103.1% net positive electricity. ❄️ Copyrighted design The unique corkscrew design of this structure circulates cool air throughout its spaces, ensuring optimal ventilation and clean air circulation, enhanced by the lush greenery of the living walls. Sustainability at FIVE Hotels and Resorts is about looking ahead – We’re developing ideas that are going to shape the future of hospitality, construction, and luxury living. Because we want to build a world that centres around our trailblazing ethos of Sustainable Indulgence. #Luxury #Sustainability #Hospitality #SustainableIndulgence

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗔 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗮. This project incorporates stone barrel vaults in a social housing building and adjacent pedestrian streets. The design aims to provide thermal inertia for natural cooling during the summer, minimising energy poverty. Marès sandstone, sourced locally with minimal energy input, is used. The dead, dry leaves of Posidonia serve as insulation. The flexible layout and exposed hygrothermal materials emphasise adaptability and sustainability. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 ✅ A holistic design that follows the qualities of the natural materials used, reduces the carbon emissions and provides high levels of of comfort. ✅ Use of local Mares stone (extracted 18 away from the building) as main material for the construction, which reduces the embodied carbon of the building. ✅ The stone construction provides thermal inertia to cool down in the temperature inside the building. ✅ Cross ventilation and the vernacular ‘mallorquinas’ (shutters) help to keep the temperature down, benefiting from the sea breeze (Embat). ✅ The light roof is supported on a structure of wooden trusses with steel tensors and reused solid wood formwork boards. ✅ The insulation is made of 30 cm of dead dry leaves of Posidonia from Cala Estància, 11km from the site. ✅ The hygrothermal materials that make up the structure are left exposed to activate inertia and regulate the high humidity in the region. ✅ The division between the bedrooms is made of wood so that in the future it can be disassembled allowing greater flexibility. 8𝗛𝗣𝗣 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗮 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗿 Palma, Mallorca, Spain Carles Oliver, Xim Moyá Costa, Antonio Martín, Alfonso Reina, Miguel Nevado 2021 Surveyor: Marco Menéndez Construction management: Carles Oliver, Miguel Nevado (structure).
