AMR > A silent pandemic According to current trends, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could take 50 million lives each year by 2050. The Australian Medical Association(AMA) points to a number of challenges in the fight against AMR in Australia, including: 🔹 Poor public awareness of antimicrobial resistance 🔹 Weak antimicrobial stewardship practices 🔹 Poor incentives for antimicrobial R&D 🔹 Uncoordinated governance structures Lumos Diagnostics recognises this urgent call to action. 🔍 When you combine the perspectives of a clinical nutritionist and a theriogenologist, you get... a uniquely insightful scientific outlook I think. 😊 And that's exactly what my colleague Megan and I offered yesterday in our evening webinar: "Kitty Gut Health: Treating Kittens' GI Challenges." Our goal was to provide veterinarians with a fresh approach to diagnosing and treating these common digestive issues in kittens. 🚑 By blending Megan's expertise in nutrition with my theriogenology background, we were able to paint a comprehensive picture of the complex factors at play -encompassing weaning diarrhea as well as acute and chronic pediatric diarrhea (after 16 weeks of age). Considering there are many “raw milk dairies” in Iowa and the commercialization of raw milk is legal with loose guidelines, this is concerning for public health in our state. I see people selling raw milk left and right on social media and both producers/consumers need to be made aware of the risks. I don’t want to see a news article about the first people that consume H5N1 tainted milk.

𝘿𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙗𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 This also applies in terms of finding a solution to a problem of decreased performance in a #𝙋𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙧𝙮 farm. Clinical symptoms that appear in a flock of chickens are not necessarily the main cause of #egg drop or high mortality. In some cases, this can happen due to mismanagement of maintenance that is wrong and goes on for a long time, ultimately causing stress in the chickens, decreased feed intake, illness and death. Especially in commercial #layer chickens, this could be a factor in decreasing production from: 1. #DOC to #Pullet rearing system, 2. density of chickens in each cage, 3. feeding not according to age eg. Chickens that are already in production are still given starter feed only to catch up on body weight and so on. These conditions include causing Fatty Liver Syndrome which can cause immunosuppression so that antibody titers are always low and field virus challenges are seen. The conditions above must be handled one by one, starting from - Providing good and stable quality feed, - Improving rearing management, - recording must be appropriate to field conditions, - Administering antibiotics according to cases and schedules, - etc. So don't ever see something as just clinical symptoms without paying attention to the main cause, we in the field are always confirmed by the chicken's condition because the chicken will speak honestly.
