Four decades ago, a few activists began working for the rights of the Bhil Adivasis of Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Soon a mass organisation was formed, Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sangath (KMCS), and over the years it has not only ensured the rights to the forests for its members but has also conserved them along with soil and water, improved access to government development schemes, initiated a strong movement to preserve Bhil Adivasi culture and knowledge and integrated it with an appropriate education system. Along the way it became evident that even though women participated in the general struggles, their own problems arising from patriarchy were not being addressed. So about three decades ago, a Bhil women's mass organisation, Kansari nu Vadavno (KnV), was set up to fight for gender rights and women's health. This organisation has not only fought patriarchy within and without Bhil society and addressed the neglected issue of women's gynaecological health but has also initiated a movement for revival of traditional Bhil agriculture and the role of women in it. The basic philosophy that informs this organisational work is that people at the grassroots must be in control of their destiny by designing their development programmes and then pressurising the government and the administration to facilitate their implementation. Given the fact that the centralised political and economic systems are inherently inimical to such a bottom up approach, the KMCS and KnV have had to fight hard to actualise this philosophy. Subhadra Khaperde and I will be speaking on the challenges faced by these organisations and how they have fought to overcome them in an interactive webinar organised by the Policy & Development Advisory Group (PDAG) on Saturday, 30th March 2024 at 12 noon and those interested can register at the following link - https://lnkd.in/gXiHc3cq

It is the education which is the right weapon to cut social slavery and it is the education which will enlighten the downtrodden masses to come up and gain social status, economic betterment and political freedom, this is the philosophy of a Great Indian Dr. Babasaheb Ramji Ambedkar. We are today on 14th April 2024 celebrating the 133th birthday of a 'Father of Indian Constitution'. Babasaheb Ambedkar's many messages to the youth include his speeches emphasizing the importance of education, self-reliance and social justice. According to him, only because of education, the bright future of the youth can be lived with confidence. He always encouraged the youth to pursue education, especially in disadvantaged communities where the future of personal growth and social progress is in the hands of the youth. Ambedkar always emphasized that life can be lived with dignity through self-reliance and continued to appeal to the youth to live independently and not depend on others for their own and society's well-being. Doing so will enable them to take responsibility for their lives and work towards their goals. Moreover, Ambedkar was a strong supporter of social justice and believed that society can be made better if the participation of the youth plays an important role in creating a more fair and just society. For that, he insisted that the youth should fight against discrimination and inequality in the society and work to create a society free from casteism, gender discrimination and other forms of discrimination. Overall, Ambedkar's message to the youth was one of hope, empowerment and social responsibility that would serve them well in the future. He believed that youth had the power to bring about positive change in each of their communities and at large, and encouraged every youth to use their talents and abilities to bring about change. #DrAmbedkarJayanti2024 #Jaybhim

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, a towering figure in Indian history, dedicated his life to fighting for equality and social justice. Born in 1827, Phule witnessed firsthand the cruelty of the caste system and untouchability. He emerged as a powerful voice for the oppressed, particularly the Shudras and Ati-Shudras who were denied basic rights. Phule firmly believed that education was the key to social progress. In a bold move that challenged societal norms, he and his wife Savitribai Phule established the first school for girls in India in 1848. This act ignited a flame for women's education and equal access to knowledge. Phule didn't stop there. He went on to establish several schools specifically for girls and Shudras, striving to dismantle the barriers that kept them from learning. Phule's commitment to social reform extended beyond education. In 1873, he founded the Satyashodhak Samaj, meaning "Truth Seeker's Society." This organization became a platform for critical thinking and reason-based social reform. The Samaj challenged the authority of the Vedas and the caste system, advocating for a society built on equality and justice for all. Mahatma Jyotirao Phule's legacy is one of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to social change. His tireless efforts paved the way for a more just and equitable India. He is rightly hailed as the "father of Indian social revolution," and his ideas continue to inspire movements for equality even today. #MahatmaJyotiraoPhule #SocialReformer #EducationForAll #WomensEducation #CasteSystemAbolition #SatyashodhakSamaj #FightForEquality #IndianHistory #SocialJusticeWarrior

One Nation, One Law, One India Uniform Civil Code: The Path to National Unity and Equality The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a law that establishes a uniform legal framework for all citizens, regardless of their religion, caste, or gender. It is an issue that has been debated in India for decades. What are the benefits of UCC for all of us? Equality: It will provide equal legal rights to all citizens, eliminating discrimination based on gender, religion, or caste. Justice: It will simplify the legal system and make access to justice easier for all citizens. National Unity: It will help reduce religious and social divisions and promote a stronger national sentiment. Development: It will accelerate social and economic development, especially in the areas of education and empowerment for women. 📚 Promoting Educational Equality in India 🇮🇳 In 2009, India made a significant stride towards educational equity with the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which ensures free and compulsory education for children in grades 1-8. A key feature of this act, Clause 12(1)(c), mandates that private unaided schools reserve 25% of their seats for children from economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups. However, while access numbers are tracked, we often miss out on crucial insights into the demographics, retention rates, and challenges faced by these students once they are admitted. Since 2017, Indus Action has been dedicated to understanding the retention, educational status, and discrimination faced by students admitted under RTE 12(1)(c). This year, in collaboration with a team of Master’s students from Georgetown University, we've revamped the Retention Survey to delve deeper. Our 2024 survey, conducted across Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Odisha, highlights trends in retention and discrimination among two cohorts: students admitted in 2021-22 and 2022-23. With an overall response rate of 67%, the findings reveal retention rates of 86.5% and 93.2% for the respective cohorts. Notably, girls in the 2021-22 cohort showed a significantly higher retention rate (92.8%) compared to boys (81.8%). 📊 Curious to learn more? Empowering Children, Eradicating Child Labour: BPCL's Project Akshar Shines Bright! In the heartlands of Nandurbar, Maharashtra, and Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Project Akshar, supported by BPCL, is rewriting the narrative of early-age education. This transformative initiative has evolved into a mass movement, touching the lives of countless young children from tribal communities across 1,059 villages. At its core, Project Akshar recognises the pivotal role education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty and preventing child labour. It's disheartening to note that many children in these regions were dropping out of school prematurely, facing barriers like diverse dialects hindering their learning journey. To address this challenge head-on, 'Read India' was launched, a pioneering effort that aimed at bolstering reading and arithmetic skills among children in standards 3 to 5, through a collaborative approach involving government agencies, educators, volunteers, and parents. Teacher training, community engagement, and innovative methodologies have been key components of the strategy, ensuring that no child is left behind. By equipping young minds with the tools, they need to succeed, we're not only laying the foundation for a brighter future but also creating a powerful deterrent against the scourge of child labour. As we commemorate World Day Against Child Labour, let's champion initiatives like Project Akshar, where every child's right to learn is upheld, and every dream is nurtured to fruition Like, follow, and share to inspire more such initiatives! #BPCL #ProjectAkshar #EndChildLabor #YouthEducation #BrightFuture #CSR
