New product: Castello Collection KKK Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates - Available at MBSDpipes.com Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ This might just be the nicest smooth finish Castello I’ve ever held. It’s a Collection, so it’s one of Castello’s highest standard grades, but the straight grain patterns are so tight and evenly distributed around its bowl that I’m surprised the stummel didn’t end up as an Aristocratica. As an extra distinction, this Castello includes a bare plateau rim, which I’m normally only used to seeing on Great Line freehands, if on Castello pipes at all. Judging by the shape code in the “castle” stamp, this pipe was made in 1991, while Carlo Scotti was still head of the Castello workshop. It’s a 3 (out of a possible 4) “K” grade Collection, and the “N” stamp indicates that the pipe was originally sold at Milan’s Noli Pipe tobacconist. The condition is great. There’s some inner rim darkening, but nothing major. Details: Length: 5.5″ / 139.7mm Bowl Width: 0.85 / 21.59mm Bowl Depth: 1.46″ / 37.08mm Weight: 1.2oz / 36g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/rVKLds #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

So many practical everyday solutions with galvanized steel…
“Midnattsloppet” is a running competition that is held every year on a late August evening in Stockholm. The race is 10 km and takes place in parts of a quite hilly environment in the south of the city. The evening usually becomes festive, not least for the large audience that follows the runners from restaurants and pubs along the way. Hot-dip galvanized fences line a large part of the track and keep the coast clear for the competitors. Just another example of all useful products constructed from hot-dip galvanized steel. #galvanizing #galvanizedsteel #galvanizedfences

New product: GBD Sir Jeffrey 954 Smooth Liverpool Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker most associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought by English company Oppenheimer at the beginning of the 20th century, who opened factories in London and Paris to meet an increasing demand for the make’s high-quality and highly desirable pipes. Partly owing to the make’s inventive, yet traditional shapes, and partly due to the high standards of their production, GBD pipes are particularly coveted by collectors, as well as those who simply appreciate classic, well-made smoking instruments. I must say, when this GBD landed on my desk, I said to my wife, “if I made pipes, I would stain them like this.” It is a genuinely gorgeous – not to mention distinct – blood orange sort of hue, which works wonderfully to bring out the bird’s-eye and cross grain patterns covering its stummel. The shape is a Liverpool, which isn’t so common these days, but which was once an established staple of pipe-making. It is a fittingly traditional piece from a make that helped create such traditions in the first place. The pipe is also completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It has one or two fills that have worn out over time, but there is nothing else of note as regards its condition (it is unsmoked, after all). The pipe also comes with its original box and sleeve. Details: Length: 6″ / 152.4mm Bowl Width: 0.81 / 20.57mm Bowl Depth: 1.77″ / 44.95mm Weight: 1.6oz / 46g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/SNYTQk #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Astleys of London Rusticated Liverpool Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes. Along with the Canadian, the Liverpool is one of my all-time favorite traditional pipe shapes. Part of it is the functionalist in me: it’s simple, easy to handle, and a shorter stem means much less in the way of maintenance. Additionally, they’re often very lightweight, as this one one is, making them easy clenchers. As for who made this one, it’s difficult to know for certain. But the rusticated finish – absent from the majority of the house styles of Astleys pipe suppliers – makes me think this might just be a later James Upshall piece. The condition is good. There’s some rim darkening, especially on the back rim, but the finish is otherwise without significant blemishes, and the pipe’s vulcanite stem is free from chatter (even the Astleys “A” logo has been perfectly preserved!). Details: Length: 5.5″ / 139.7mm Bowl Width: 0.74 / 18.79mm Bowl Depth: 1.45″ / 36.83mm Weight: 1.0oz / 30g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/daHftL #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: Castello “Castello” KKK Smooth Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ This particular Castello is the workshop’s interpretation of the traditional Lovat shape. But, being an Italian workshop, they have their own idea of what a good Lovat looks like. While the pipe is not a large one, the bowl is larger in proportion to the shank than, say, an English Lovat might be, which gives the pipe’s profile an extra assertiveness. This added heft is counterbalanced by some beautiful bird’s-eye grain, which is brought out by a stain that mixes red, orange, and brown hues. Curiously, this Castello also has a small star (or, technically, an asterisk) just to the top right of the Castello nomenclature. I’m not really sure what this means, and I’ve handled quite a few Castellos in my time. Does it denote something special? If you happen to know, please let me know. The condition is great. There’s some rim darkening, but nothing I would call major. This pipe came in through our estates trade-in program, and was joined by its original box and sleeve, which will be passed along to the pipe’s next owner. Details: Length: 5.2″ / 132.0mm Bowl Width: 0.76 / 19.30mm Bowl Depth: 1.46″ / 37.08mm Weight: 1.3oz / 38g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/TfgqS1 #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

SOLD: Ardor Urano Big 2021 Partially Rusticated Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates $300 Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own. Squat bulldog shapes have been around since the mid-20th century, though this is not to say that everyone makes theirs the same way. Dunhill’s is not the same as Tom Eltang’s; Tom Eltang’s is not the same as Michael Parks’. And neither is the same as this one. While a great width is characteristic of the basic form, this Ardor squat bulldog is even wider than most. In addition to being singularly assertive in form, the pipe also has a wider chamber is typical, guaranteeing that it will smoke ribbon cuts and mixtures like a dream. The condition is excellent. The pipe has been smoked, but a handful of times at most. It also comes, via our trade-in program, with its original box and sleeve. Details: Length: 6.5″ / 165.1mm Bowl Width: 0.95 / 24.13mm Bowl Depth: 1.51″ / 38.35mm Weight: 3.8oz / 110g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/hySZs5 #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd
