They’re splitting wildlife habitats in half. 🌿 For the wildlife, it’s like us suddenly waking up to find a highway running through our living room! But here’s the thing—we can still fix this🌍It’s time to start thinking about development that doesn’t force nature to move out. What do you think? How can we make space for both progress and the planet? 🌱 #WildlifeConservation #EcoFriendlyLiving #GreenInfrastructure #SustainabilityMatters #PlanetOverProfit

Creating and connecting habitats is vital for species' survival and movement. In honor of #WorldWildlifeConservationDay, here are three elements to include in campus #landscapearchitecture that favorably impact #biodiversity: • Diverse Habitats provide a variety of plants and landscape features to support different species. • Green Corridors enable wildlife to move safely between habitats. • Layered Vegetation caters to different wildlife needs at different heights.

In a recent CBC article, Y2Y'S Landscape Connectivity Specialist, Tim Johnson, shed light on the crucial developments in connectivity across Alberta’s highways. As Tim explains, the new wildlife overpasses and underpasses, including those at Crowsnest Pass and near Canmore, are vital for reducing dangerous encounters between vehicle-wildlife collisions. "If you look at the record of collisions, collisions with deer and elk have gone down by 96 per cent. On average for all species, it's around 80 per cent in the national park," Tim told CBC. These innovative crossings are part of a growing network designed to protect both animals and drivers by guiding wildlife through natural habitats, safely away from busy roads. With about 30,000 vehicles driving these routes daily, the impact of these structures is significant. Read the full article to learn more about how these crossings keep wildlife safe and maintain connectivity across the majestic landscapes of the Yellowstone to Yukon region. If you have had the good sense to read Mark Avery latest book 'Reflections' or Guy Shrubsole's 'Lie Of The Land' you will know that it's imperative for areas of land to be owned by non farming and non shooting interests so it can be truly dedicated to nature. This is one such opportunity to help do just that - the bigger the patch, or the closer it is to an existing area for nature (farmed or not), or the more it holds things we need more of (can I say woodland here please??), the better. Bigger is always better of course but a network of little plots is good too.
