Like many councils in NSW, Northern Beaches is facing growing financial pressure with a widening gap between income from rates and the cost to maintain and deliver services like roads, footpaths, sportsfields, playgrounds and pools. This week we launched the Funding our Future campaign. We are asking the community to consider 4 options: Option 1: Reduce services Option 2: Maintain services Option 3: Improve services Option 4: Increase services While Option 1 would see rates stay on the same path and result in reduced services, the other options would ensure long-term financial stability for the Northern Beaches. To help our community understand all the options, we built an online Rates Calculator to give everyone the chance to see how the rate options affect them. We’re also holding a number of community information sessions and webinars. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gN-PP597

Tune in tomorrow Thursday Oct 3rd at 11am to see our Thea Kurdi who has been one of the many invited to testify to the Canadian parliamentary committee (HUMA) tasked with reviewing progress on the Accessibility Act. Thea will be talking about what changes need to occur to ensure, at least for the built environment, that Canada is accessible as soon as possible or at least before the 2040 deadline. What do we see our clients who trying to get accessibility right struggling with? How is the building code helping or hurting outcomes? And more... What do you think? 5 years onto this 20 year deadline, how successful has the Accessible Canada Act been? What opportunities for improvement do you wish for? #AccessibleCanada #accessibility #UniversalDesign #disability #inclusion #EvidenceBasedDesign #statistics #CRPD #SDGs #HumanRights #policy #education #

#AccessibleCanada This Week! 11am EDT Thursday Oct 3rd, 2024 The Canadian Federal Government’s House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) is currently conducting the Government’s mandatory 5-year review of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) which includes public hearings. Last week, in addition to the call for the public's submissions, myself and others were sent invitations to give testimony to this committee. You can attend these hearings Oct 1st to 3rd (this week) in person in Room 330 of the Wellington Building at 197 Sparks Street, Ottawa to watch me and others testimonials, or watch these hearings live-streamed online on the Parliaments Parvu web page at: https://lnkd.in/gsyJQhTq After 24 years as an accessible built environmentally consultant, post secondary educator, continuing education instructor, accessibility critic, accessible policy writer, author., and disabled person, you can imagine what I will be recommending based on what I've seen and heard! My top 5 recommendations (in addition to endorcing David Lepofsky and the AODA Alliance’s submission) with only 15 years and 3 months left to beat the 2040 deadline for a barrier-free Canada are: 1. Learn from the mistakes Ontario made with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and why their 2025 deadline will be missed; 2. Why strict and consistent enforcement is vital; 3. The importance of coordinating and fixing the National Building Code along with the design requirements from this Act so they finally align with the Canadian Charter and our Human Rights Code; 4. As the culture change wanted starts with education, how vital funding is for changes to post secondary and professional continuing education programs and licensing requirements are; and 5. As the largest and fastest growing minority group, why creating usable accessibility in our built environment and exterior places for disabled people is not only the smartest, fiscally responsible action government can take, but the most sustainable. Note: Accessibility is a lot more than just buildings and outdoor spaces, but... it is the physical infrastructure that either supports or sabotages all other accessibility policies and goals. #TeachableMoment #architecture #InteriorDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanPlanning #design #disability #inclusion #education #legislation #policy #BigData #CRPD #SDGs #CultureChange #WeAreBillionStrong #BillionStrong

At our recent (super) conference, we unveiled our new localism guide—a go-to resource for transforming localism into action. This guide is packed with practical tips for councils and features an array of inspiring case studies from both local and international projects. Here’s a glimpse at some standout localism initiatives making an impact across the country: The School Sustainability and Resilience Fund: Powered by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, this fund is all about empowering schools to champion sustainability. It supports projects aimed at environmental education, sustainable practices, and resilience-building activities. The goal? To help schools cut their environmental footprint, adapt to changing conditions, and instil the importance of sustainability. Urban Plus: Based in Lower Hutt and operating under the Hutt City Council, Urban Plus provides social housing to Hutt City residents in need. From urban regeneration to housing development, their work is all about creating vibrant, sustainable communities. Te Kōrari, the People’s Panel: This innovative initiative by Environment Canterbury invites community members to weigh in on regional decisions through online surveys. It’s a simple yet powerful way for everyone to voice their opinions on various issues. The surveys are quick, optional, and provide invaluable feedback without replacing formal consultations. Catch the highlights in our video here: https://lnkd.in/gaHpkYRF

No benefits for some of the worst affected areas. In East Tilbury we will get increased pollution, massive disruption and no access to the crossing that will literally cut through our community. What benefits will be provided for our residents?
