I would really like to know more about what’s going on in this particular situation. Many nonprofits have a volunteer guild that supports them. I was a member of as well as the recipient of the benefits of guilds both when I was at Weathervane Playhouse in Akron as well as at the Akron Civic Theater. I believe the Civic theater guild still exists, It provides financial and volunteer support on behalf of the Civic, which is essentially a presenting organization. Weathervane”s guild, which started as a women’s guild, and then eventually added men has been all but eliminated because certain members of the board did not fully appreciate the work of the volunteers. I think this was mainly because they did not appreciate the opinions that came along with that volunteer support. When you have a volunteer program, which is essential for most nonprofits with which I have worked, it needs to be managed smartly either from a dedicated staff member or by people who really want to take the leadership on as a volunteer and are willing to do this under the direction of the nonprofit it serves. Of course the Metropolitan Guild looks like it was quite an operation; more like it’s own organization that was built up to serve the needs of the Met. But even in a not-for-profit, having too many opinions about how things should be managed can be detrimental. That may well be why this is happening—I don’t know for sure, of course. But I also worry that, for many nonprofits across the United States, losing those passionate volunteers that are willing to come and support the needs of a local nonprofit is what part of what is bringing the not-for-profit arts organizations to their knees in recent times. I was listening to a story on NPR this morning about an Animal Hospital sanctuary in Sausalito which utilizes 150,000 volunteer hours to keep itself in operation. The volunteers ranging from age 11 to 90. There’s some real merit in this type of service and if it can keep an organization going I think that’s a good thing. But to do this takes really smart management, realized gratitude, and appreciation for the people who are helping you do the work you’re doing. And eliminating in the organizational culture a caste system between those who are being paid and do this for a living and those who are volunteering and doing it as an avocation. It takes a special kind of leader to manage this balance and it’s harder than you think. And in my opinion, ordinarily, you can’t do this for too long…because ultimately opinions get in the way. But I think this support is essential, unless we completely upend the nonprofit system in this country as it stands. If only for survival purposes, smart organizations, should be looking for leaders that know how to do this. Off the box now.—

🤔 Sometimes the simplest of questions are the deepest. “Why are you here?” was asked at a prison recital last month. The prisoner wanted to know why performers would come to such a place when we could be anywhere else. ❓ But that question meant more to me than just why I would perform music in a prison. That question is a question any musician should be able to answer honestly at any point in their career. Read on how asking "Why" is a powerful exercise in career direction and grounding: #why #path #decisions #justify #knowing #orchestra #nonprofit #prisonreform #understanding #engagement #audiencequestions

Another old but still relavent blog: "I dare anyone involved in this business, especially philanthropic institutions interested in improving the orchestra business, to read the New York Times article and take the time and money to work with a psychologist for a season to see if they could improve the marketing angle and give the symphony a better edge against pleasure procrastinator syndrome." Our office is next to a 7-11. They have installed both outdoor speakers that blare opera music and a series of intense flood lights because people experiencing #homelessness are often on the public sidewalk near their front door. It both saddens and infuriates me that these corporations have decided to treat people that need housing and support as nuisances that should simply be shooed away. What those experiencing homelessness need is to be treated with dignity and respect. What they need is permanent housing and supports. Walgreens and 7-11 clearly are willing to spend money on addressing homelessness, however backward and cruel it is. Since they understand homelessness is an issue in our city, why don't they actually invest in proven solutions? Why don't they back #BringChicagoHome, which is about investing in Chicagoans? There is nothing funny about what these corporations are doing. They are putting their own comfort and profit above the needs of those pushed to the margins. Do better.

The Lijadu Sisters' re-release project is a long-overdue attempt to right the wrongs of a music industry that exploited and silenced two pioneering artists. The fact that it took decades for them to regain control of their work and receive some compensation is a damning indictment of the systemic injustices that have perpetuated inequality in the music industry. The project's focus on reparation is a necessary step towards accountability, but it must also be accompanied by a commitment to transparency and structural change. Anything less would be a hollow gesture, perpetuating the same exploitative dynamics that have historically silenced marginalized voices. #LijaduSisters #Nigeria #Music #MusicIndustryReform #ReparationNow #FairnessInMusic #NoMoreExploitation https://lnkd.in/eYPFT_KP
