Before hiring a frac sand transportation company consider its size. Family-owned and privately owned businesses treat you more like family, but you also have to consider the size of their fleet. A company with only a few trucks can be a business risk as it may not be able to scale with you. The Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 Report highlights how important the work we do is. Any small cutting of corners or being conservative with the truth has the risk of costing lives. It's so shocking to see how carless so many people were and how little effort they put into their work. And many brave firefighters fought to save lives and deaths that could have been prevented. Hopefully this tragedy will prevent more from happening in the future. As a junior fire test engineer, I carry out detailed survey of fire test specimens, so we are certain of what it is composed of. Impartiality, integrity and accountability is at the forefront of what we do.

Millwork Carpenter | Field Leadership Coaching | Fighter for the Skilled Trades | People-First & Technology-Second Approach
Over and over again for twenty-five years, I've seen the finger pointed at the skilled trades in the field. Rather than take responsibility for errors, mistakes, or oversites. Like gunfighters, the office or trailer 'quick draw' that pointer finger and start pointing away. Lazy, stupid, incompetent, they say. "They just don't care" At times this may be the case, but if it is it is indicative of a much greater problem. I have worked with elite crews, the best of the best, at times we could not hit the estimated hours. We were experienced, efficient, and skilled but despite our best efforts, we could not hit the estimated numbers. We often joked that for our entire careers, we had never been on a project that made money, because that was all we had ever heard. I will confess that one of the big reasons that I was in the field all of last week was an estimation mistake. I severely underestimated the time it would take to install a couple of millwork elevations. It was the first project that I had estimated and our first bid with this manufacturer. Even if this is a valid excuse, the consequences were the same. I have the skills so I took it upon myself to install the bulk of these elevations. The manufacturer PM jokingly called it my "white whale". Like Captain Ahab I put my head down and did what I needed to do. Not compromising my standards or our company's standards, I saw it through. It was my mistake, but a valuable mistake, a lesson learned. Until we bridge the chasm between the field and the office this will only continue to get worse. I have worked on both sides and the misconceptions go both ways. There is one certainty. The better that we collaborate the better we can be. #construction #lead #leadership #skilledtrades #trades #PM #superintendent #blucollar #millwork
