🎉 As we celebrate Independence Day, it is a time to reflect on the true meaning of freedom in today’s world. For us at ITDP India, this reflection is deeply tied to our commitment to sustainable transport. What does freedom look like now? Is it freedom from polluting personal vehicles? Freedom from the gridlock that chokes our streets? Freedom from the dangers of unsafe roads? Or is it the freedom to walk, run, and cycle without fear? We believe it is all of these. 🚶♀️ 🚴♀️ 🏃♀️ With this vision, a campaign called the Freedom2WalkCycleRun or popularly known as F2WCR was launched in 2022 under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, by the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. ITDP India was the official knowledge partner for the initiative in association with BYCS, AltMO and All India Cycle Manufacturers' Association - AICMA. Our collective mission was to empower city leaders to lead from the front and demonstrate to their citizens that walking and cycling are for everyone! They stepped into the shoes of pedestrians and cyclists and hit the streets, to see the city through the eyes of the users, hence empathising with them to make nuanced decisions - towards healthier streets. Here’s a sneak peek of our upcoming report – 'Promoting Behaviour Change towards Walking and Cycling', where we chronicle the journey of this campaign right from inception to exploring the future of similar behaviour change campaigns. The report also highlights the various other behaviour change campaigns initiated to encourage cycling and walking in our cities. 👟 ✨Stay tuned for the report launch!✨ Wishing everyone a Happy Independence Day! Let’s continue the journey towards true freedom—on our roads and beyond.🙌 Partners: Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Fit India, Sathyanarayanan Sankaran (AltMo), BYCS, All India Cycle Manufacturers' Association - AICMA. Situation very well described. We recently discussed - "hand over some funds and a bus service to us" - we can turn it around. The funds we will demand will be proportionally very less in front of the spend on infra, roads, metros, tunnels, subsidies for electric etc. There are enough studies to prove that every rupee spent on making buses better will get more in returns to mitigate climate change and imporve livabiity index of cities in India. We are focusing only on making buses electric - which is great but more needs to be done to strengthen the Buses as a user centric service integrated with all modes of transport. Thanks Shreya Gadepalli for this post
A catalyst to transform the lives of everyone through better streets, better transit, and better cities.

How the roads can transform the rural and tribal life. Just travelled Purulia district in West Bengal. We have planned stay at a hotel in Ajodhay hill top is 32 Km from Purulia town. Ajodhya hill top is not a real hill station like in Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh. However, efforts made by the State Government to popularise this 'unreal' hill top is worth noting. The 32 kms road from Purulia to reach Ajodhya hill top is pucka and is so smooth gives feelings of high ways ride. The good road encourages the tourist to try out these less popular and less crowded tourist spots. The Ajodhaya hill top is dominated by tribal population. Local tribal boys have got opportunity as tour driver. Visited Upper and Lower dam, Bamni Falls, Marble lake and Turga falls. Murugama dams road journey is an interesting route crossing one way through dense jungle. On the ways serene view of suicide point is never a miss point. Chau Mask and antiquity exploration can also be tried. Lot of home stays, gives opportunity to the local tribal families to earn by showcasing the tribal life to the rest of world. Good resorts and hotels have come up in and around the hill top. Though few of tribal youth are also employed in these resorts and hotels but numbers are certainly not enough. Tribal youth at these resorts and hotel lacks professionalism needed for theses hospitality industry. Government can encourage the hotel or resort owners to train these tribal youth to become fit for hospitality industry.

"Ever wondered how a simple walk can turn into an epic journey through time? Let me tell you about an experience that changed my perspective on cultural heritage!" Working with an NGO promoting tourism in India, I organized heritage walks for school students to spark curiosity and pride in our cultural history. Exploring Varanasi's ancient ghats, hidden alleys, and historical tales, I saw students' awe and connection to their heritage. A standout moment was a student's remark by the river Ganga: "I never knew history could be this alive!" This experience reaffirmed my belief in the power of education and tourism to transform perspectives and preserve our heritage. #TVSCredit, #TVSCreditEPIC6, #UsherInTheEpicWave, #CampusChallenge, #MyEPICStory
