The genetically modified corn being developed here not only yields up to 25% more but also defends itself against the larvae of the destructive corn borer. With 10-30% of the world’s corn crops lost to pests each year, this genetic innovation offers a sustainable solution. Through modified DNA, this corn is more resilient to pests and less prone to fungal infections, significantly reducing the need for insecticides and the risk of harmful mycotoxins. Supporting this groundbreaking research is state-of-the-art technology, including our HALDRUP CTS-95 twin-plot combine, which plays a key role in these trials. Equipped with a built-in mill, the machine ensures that unapproved genetically modified seeds are safely rendered non-viable, mitigating any potential environmental risks. These multi-talented superplants are not only boosting crop yields but also paving the way for more sustainable farming practices. We were on-site in Nebraska to successfully commission the HALDRUP CTS-95, and now the path is clear for Jeremiah Lazo and his team to forge ahead in developing superplants that will one day revolutionize our harvests. There is a need for objective discussion on how to ensure Scottish farming and associated research (including for crops, livestock, and aquaculture) is not hindered in its competitiveness by missing this opportunity to embrace gene editing, and its potential to contribute to sustainable solutions for addressing the challenges facing these industries.
