Last week I had the absolute honor of not only getting to see my daughter compete at a national level, but was also able to help as a judge for the National Speech and Debate Association, 2024 National Tournament. The entire experience really brought a few things to my attention: 1. We have some absolutely amazing minds in this generation that is coming up. They were absolutely incredible to see. 2. The skills they are learning, both in Speech events and Debate events, are such assets to the workplace. They have an amazing ability to see things from different perspectives, convey confidence, and persuade you to hear their voice and their view point. 3. There is nothing more educational, than to try something, and have to work hard to succeed at it, even through failures. The entire competition was over 6,700 of the best student speakers. So many of them came and gave 100%, but not all walked away with the trophy at the end. The thing that stood out to me most the whole week was how many of them truly still walked away with smiles, motivated, and absolutely hungry to come back and show us what they have again next year. This lesson of how to learn through failure is such an asset. This is the live stream from several of the speech events. My favorites were the Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation events, and Extemporaneous Debate (which is a different stream). Heads up it's long, but Humorous and Duo are pretty amazing to watch! https://lnkd.in/dCVAdRdY

This excellent piece from John Dodge below ⬇ is congruent with how we understand #Irishness on Irish Stew. Many people have multiple geographic identities; co-host Martin Nutty was born in #Dublin to an #Irish father and #English mother and has lived in #NYC for over 40 years. Is he Irish? - Yes, Is he #British - Yes. Is he #American - Yes All of the above ⬆ are NOT mutually exclusive. Our political world is troubled by a trend towards ugly binaryism. It is most pronounced by those who focus on skin color, an ugly legacy of Western hemispheric slavery, and its turgid spawn - racism. Those who spout such retrograde nonsense rarely have any understanding of history or their own ancestral past, which might be far more diverse than they care to believe. Being Irish is not simply a matter of DNA, nativity, the ability to speak #Gaeilge, or residency on the island. If all those things were required, the Irish world would shrink dramatically. At Irish Stew, we believe in big-tent #Irishness and that a more inclusive understanding of what it means to be Irish would better serve Ireland and its vast diaspora. Modern Irishness is an idea that binds Irish people together who share a deep affection for their home island. It is based on a respectful egalitarian view of the individual without regard for race or creed but is collectively rooted in fidelity to the country's governing law. Those who would impose some spurious bright line test must be reminded that Patrick Pearse's DNA was half English, Tom Clarke was born in southern England, and James Connolly spoke with a pronounced Scottish accent. Nobody thinks of any of these men as anything other than Irish. #GlobalIrishNation #BlackAndIrish https://lnkd.in/eympSCyv

I was mentioned in Gallaudet Today for my IDMA cohort and my contribution to the Global Fair on what it's like for deaf people here and abroad in terms of low-income to high-income countries. Turns out high-income countries doesn't necessarily equate to better access for deaf people, or that deaf people have poor access in low-income countries. It seems that socio-political-economic realities for deaf people is more complex globally than normally assumed and depends on much more than a country's productive capabilities. The article in question begins on page 44.

📍 Joining Prestigious Competetion and Awards At Toastmasters, we have four prestigious competitions: humorous speech, Table Topics (Impromptu), Evaluation Speech, and International Speech Contest. It is a privilege to be on the stage, to compete, to face one's own fear, and to demonstrate the art of speaking. Over 130 clubs are now preparing for Toastmasters' biggest event, the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Competition. Yes, at Toastmasters New Zealand North District 112, we learned when to use #humour in a #conversation, #meeting and #presentation. Table Topics is an #impromptu speech, and you were like having an #interview. We learned when to use our hands for gestures and increase our tone or pitch. A Red Alert if you use #ams, #ah, #so, #fillers, #you know. I could write more than 1,000 stories about how Toastmasters New Zealand North District 112 truly makes a difference and truly cares about people. I am sharing with you Auckland Toastmasters Club, one of the Toastmasters New Zealand North District 112. "Where Leaders are Made." #softskills #publicspeaking #confidence #professionaldevelopment

In January 2013, a video of fellow long-distance runner Iván Fernández shoving a lost Mutai towards the finish line during the Burlada Cross Country race rather than passing Mutai and winning the race went viral. Fernández was globally praised for his sportsmanship "Kenyan 🇰🇪 Abel Mutai who was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race. A Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening, started shouting at the Kenyan to continue running. Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Realizing what was taking place, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A journalist asked Ivan later, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win. The journalist insisted, "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his." The journalist insisted again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor in that medal? What would my mother think of that?" Values are passed on from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways and means to win. Instead, let us pass on the beauty and humanity of a helping hand. Because honesty and ethics are winning!"
