Today is Gold Star Children’s Day, the day we recognize the children of our Nation's Fallen Military Heroes. We were honored to host two Gold Star Sons last month at Camp OBR. For nine years, we’ve held a vision close to our hearts of a healing place, and now it has become a reality. In July of 2023 Camp OBR proudly held its inaugural retreat for Fathers, Sons, and Husbands of Fallen Military Service Members. Together they embarked on a transformative journey, finding healing through camaraderie, culinary therapy alongside our renowned pitmasters, and completing service projects in honor of their fallen loved ones. With heartfelt pride, we share this video that captures the unforgettable week we experienced together. Witness their resilience, camaraderie, and dedication as they pay tribute to their Fallen Heroes through meaningful service projects. We are humbled and privileged to welcome these incredible individuals into the Operation BBQ Relief family. Join us in honoring the sacrifices and courage of the children and families of our Fallen Military. To learn how you can support Camp OBR, visit www.campobr.org. 🇺🇸 Honoring Our Heroes on Memorial Day 🇺🇸 "Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices." – Harry S. Truman Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have secured the freedoms we cherish every day. As we reflect on the significance of this day, let's also recognize the families who have lost loved ones. On this Remembrance Day, a significant date etched deeply in our consciousness, we pause to reflect and honor the brave souls who served - and continue to serve - around the world. This day carries a weight of gratitude and respect that extends beyond borders and generations. Let us unite in silence, not just to mark the cessation of the First World War, but to acknowledge the sacrifices and valour of our servicemen and women in all conflicts since. The poppy on our lapels symbolizes our collective memory, a poignant reminder of the blood that continues to be shed for our freedoms. In this spirit of unity and remembrance, I encourage all of you to take a moment to honour our heroes. We remember, not to glorify war, but to acknowledge its cost and to ensure that such sacrifices are never forgotten. Show your support by attending local ceremonies or perhaps consider a donation to veteran support organizations. We deliver prosperity, health, growth, and joy. Connecting people and improving lives. 29k Connections
Memorial Day, from the perspective of a veteran, is a solemn day of remembrance and honor. It’s a day to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have fallen in the line of duty, protecting the freedoms and values we hold dear. For veterans who have experienced the realities of war firsthand, Memorial Day carries a profound significance that goes beyond the typical celebrations and gatherings. It’s a day marked by memories of comrades who never made it home, whose laughter and courage are remembered in the quiet moments of a veteran’s heart. It’s a time to think about the families left behind, the empty seats at dinner tables, and the personal stories of bravery that ended too soon. Veterans understand the weight of loss and the price of freedom in a way that is deeply personal and often painful. Memorial Day is not about the living; it’s about honoring those who have given their lives for something greater than themselves. It’s about the men and women buried in cemeteries across the nation, who were more than just soldiers; they were loved ones, friends, and family. For veterans, the day may also bring a mix of emotions, including pride in their service and a sense of camaraderie with those who understand the cost of war. Yet, it can also be a challenging time, as the focus on military service and sacrifices can trigger memories and emotions related to their own experiences. As a nation, we can honor the true meaning of Memorial Day by participating in commemorative activities, observing moments of silence, and supporting organizations that provide resources and support to veterans and their families. It’s a day to ensure that the legacy of the fallen is not forgotten but is carried forward with respect and gratitude for the freedoms their sacrifices have secured.

In response to my original post, I received an excellent question from Michael Pihosh. “𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝?” Here is my answer: 🇺🇸 Participate in a Memorial Day event today like a parade, ceremony, or other event dedicated to honoring veterans. Your simple presence shows support and respect for these heroes. 🇺🇸 Donate to a veteran organization that provides services and support to veterans, such as the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and The American Legion. It doesn’t need to be a tremendous amount. It all adds up! 🇺🇸 Volunteer Your Time at a veteran hospital, care facility, or local event. Even a small amount of time makes a big difference. Don’t feel like this has to be a huge time commitment! 🇺🇸 Reach out to a veteran today if you happen to know one personally. A simple call or message to “check in” and express your gratitude means a lot to them. This can be a really short call. Don’t let the potential time commitment overwhelm you. 🇺🇸 Support and/or patronize a veteran-owned businesses. This helps them thrive in their post-service careers. 🇺🇸 Quickly educate yourself today on the history and significance of Memorial Day and share this knowledge with someone else to foster an appreciation of this holiday weekend. 🇺🇸 Advocate for veteran issues by using your voice toward policies and initiatives that benefit veterans, whether it’s through social media, writing your legislator, or participating in an advocacy group. 🇺🇸 Fly the flag at your home or business to honor those who have served and sacrificed. You can still do this today!

💥 Memorial Day means “fun”, “long weekend”, “beach or pool”, “official start of summer”, etc. Right? I learned to enjoy this weekend with little appreciation or passing thought of why we have it in the first place. Maybe like you? 🇺🇸 As a former military flight surgeon and a tireless advocate for our veterans, this weekend holds a lot more meaning for me today. The freedoms we enjoy are never far from my mind, made possible only by the selfless acts of the fallen heroes we are honoring. As is said, freedom is not – and will never be – free. 👿 There are too many dark forces in the world – think Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc – that would take great joy in seeing our country fall to its knees. Strange, right? But true. We can never lose sight of this reality. 🙏 As we honor our fallen heroes this weekend, I ask that you support our living heroes, namely our military veterans and their families. Whether through volunteering, donating, or offering a helping hand or listening ear, your support will make a big difference. 🤝 I guarantee it. Thank you and my best wishes for a safe, enjoyable, and reflective weekend. #MemorialDay #HonorOurHeroes #FreedomIsNotFree #VeteranSupport

🇺🇸 As Memorial Day approaches, it’s crucial to reflect on the profound significance behind this federal holiday. Not just a day for barbecues and family gatherings, Memorial Day serves a solemn purpose: to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military. My own memories of Memorial Day are bittersweet. Growing up, I watched my community come together to decorate the town with flags and flowers, each one representing a story, a family, a loss. It was a day of collective mourning and gratitude, strikingly different from the usual festive spirit of other holidays. 💔 The history of Memorial camp dates back to May 30, 1868, when it was first observed to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Its significance grew to encompass all American military personnel who died in service following World War I. Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all who served, Memorial Day specifically remembers those who lost their lives. Here’s how many of us observe this day: - Visiting cemeteries and memorials - Participating in local parades and memorial services - Holding a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen 🤔 But what do these observances mean to you? How do you honor this day, and what conversations do you hope it sparks among the younger generations? As we approach Memorial Day on May 27, 2024, let’s not only enjoy the freedom of a three-day weekend but also embrace the responsibility to remember and honor those who can no longer celebrate with us. 🌸 If you have personal stories or traditions related to Memorial Day, I encourage you to share them. Let’s use this space to keep the memory and significance of this day alive. #MemorialDay #HonorAndRemember #Military #USHistory #NationalService 🇺🇸 https://lnkd.in/eC7nPwj9

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆" Every year, I see a common communication mistake that makes me cringe: people and businesses saying "Happy Memorial Day" or promoting "Happy Memorial Day sales." Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country. For those remembering and mourning fallen heroes, "Happy Memorial Day" can feel out of place and insensitive. Instead, consider using more appropriate phrases such as: "Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day" "Honoring our fallen heroes this Memorial Day" "Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice" By choosing your words carefully, you show respect and understanding for the true significance of this solemn day. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 If you're promoting a sale, focus on the event without using the phrase "Happy Memorial Day." Here are some examples: "Memorial Day Weekend Sale: Honoring Our Heroes with Special Discounts" "Memorial Day Sale: Great Deals This Weekend" "Commemorate Memorial Day with Our Exclusive Offers" This approach allows you to acknowledge the significance of the holiday while promoting your sale respectfully. Let's honor their memory appropriately. #CommunicationTips #MemorialDay #Respect #HonoringOurHeroes #MarketingTips #smithmarketinggroup

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes: Memorial Day and Beyond As Memorial Day approaches, I want to highlight the often-overlooked stories behind the names we see on bridges, highways, and cemeteries. These are the names of our fallen veterans, and their stories are fading as the last survivors of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam pass on. My own ancestors served, and I grew up hearing incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice. It's a source of regret that I didn't preserve their words more carefully. We're losing precious first-hand accounts with every passing day. The recent news about the Francis Scott Key Bridge reminded me how little the younger generations may know about America’s past. Let's change that! This May, I'll be sharing stories of some of the places dedicated to fallen veterans. I hope this will inspire others to learn the history behind these names. Is there a national map or resource listing veteran-named highways and bridges? If you know of one, please share! May 2/31 Next time you're on US Highway 12, remember the sacrifices of the Iron Brigade! This Civil War unit, known for its black hats and bravery, suffered heavy losses at battles like Gettysburg. This portion of the highway is also dedicated to such battles as Second Bull Run and Antietam. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside USS Antietam (CG 54), third in name, for four deployments. Learning the history of the Battle of Antietam is well worth the read/viewing (in comments) for those who do not know of this historic battle. While the battle took place in Maryland, there are dedications to those that died in battle all along US Highway 12. Look for historical markers in WI, MI, & IN commemorating these soldiers. #IronBrigade #USHistory #RoadTrip #CivilWarBattlefield #NeverForget #Maryland #lestweforget #veterans #heroes #memorialday
