Dear Network, Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a highly insightful event hosted by B&R Beurs, featuring Steven Galea Pace, VP in Asset Management at Goldman Sachs. It was a fantastic opportunity to gain insights into equity and fundamental analysis. Key Takeaways: 📊 Equity Analysis: Assessing a company’s strength, value, and growth potential. 🧠 Qualitative Factors: Steven outlined 6 key qualitative factors that influence a company’s valuation, including the importance of: a strong balance sheet, M&A opportunities, good corporate governance and minimised risk. 🔍 Valuation Methods: Emphasised the importance of looking beyond just the numbers from technical analysis and incorporating valuation methods such as a DCF model. I had the chance to ask Steven two questions that I was particularly curious about : 1. What was your biggest failure and how did you learn from it? Steven shared that his biggest learning moment came from overanalysing a stock. By focusing too much on certain metrics that didn’t align with the company's overall potential, he missed out on a significant investment opportunity. The key takeaway? While thorough analysis is essential, there’s also value in trusting your instincts about a company’s future growth prospects. 2. What advice would you give to students aspiring to break into finance? His advice was straightforward yet powerful: Make sure you are truly passionate about the industry. While high salaries and big responsibilities are appealing, the reality is that the work is demanding, especially in financial hubs like London or New York. A strong passion for finance will keep you going through the long hours and challenges, turning what could be a grind into something meaningful and fulfilling. A big thank you to B&R Beurs for organising such a fantastic event and to Steven Galea Pace for sharing his expertise and career advice. B&R Beurs Erasmus Investment Society, Abhinav Kiran

I’m excited to share that I've just completed an intensive two-day Investment Banking Technical Course with City Investment Training, led by Sameer Merchant, CFA! Here's a quick rundown of what I learned: Day 1: We explored different roles in investment banking, from how they affect work-life balance to the financial rewards they offer. We also talked about how to ace interviews, excel in assessment centers and meet the criteria for job eligibility. The day wrapped up with a deep dive into essential accounting skills. Day 2: We put theory into practice by building complex financial models. We got to grips with Income Statements, Balance Sheets and Cash Flow Statements. My Excel skills also got a serious boost from the tasks which makes me feel way more confident in building financial models and using formulas effectively. Feeling inspired by success stories from past students, I am now ready to take on new challenges with confidence. I’d like to say thanks to Sameer Merchant, CFA and City Investment Training for this opportunity and helping me improve my financial modelling and analysis skills.
