Research and research impact are often represented and recorded as the product of discrete research projects and individuals. Drawing on their research into the wives of famous sociologists, Rosalind Edwards and Val Gillies suggest how reconsidering the impact of these researchers can nuance our understanding and approaches to public engagement and impact. #Sociology #STS #ResearchImpact #ThanksForTyping

CSA member Antonio Chiareli, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology & Intercultural Studies at Oklahoma Baptist University, raised an important topic for discussion regarding the future of sociology in Christian higher education. He says, "With declining enrollments and the redirection of resources toward STEM, professionalizing tracks, and away from the traditional Liberal Arts, the number of sociology majors/minors at such smaller and private institutions has taken a hit. Administrators are looking for ways to cut programs and use quantitative metrics to base their decisions on. As a result, sociology programs may be on the chopping block at many schools. *How do we convey the enduring value of and continued need for sociology in Christian higher education, as our institutions strive to shape our students’ thinking and skills for the future?* With stronger enrollments mostly in intro-level courses in sociology but weaker enrollments in advanced-level courses, hiring adjuncts may be a go-to in the future of our programs, and full-time faculty, even senior tenured faculty, are no longer guaranteed full-time employment until retirement age. What are your thoughts, insights, questions, or epiphanies?" We'd love to hear your thoughts in the reply section. Feel free to contact us with another question to discuss on our page. Thank you for your engagement! #Sociology #HigherEd #ChristianEducation #FutureOfSociology

An intellectually stimulating discussion led by Dr. Keith Hampton on "Social Tolerance and Shared Affordances of Social Media: Rural University Students and their Parents" at the Department of Sociology, University of Alberta last week. In our increasingly virtual world, social networking forums are constantly affecting perspectives and opinions of different segments of society, and whether or not this increases tolerance towards differences is debatable. The changes these technologies have brought, have certainly opened many research avenues. Dr. Hampton's research raised questions around the intersections of technology, changing perspectives and tolerance, including: Whether social network diversity is associated with social tolerance? How rural-urban transition and social media networks affect political ideologies? And, whether or not these changes have long-term impacts. #socialmedia #research #sociology

Calling sociologists/sociology doctoral students: Help us demonstrate the value of sociology! Share your stories on how your work has made an impact. Across the nation, we are facing political incursion into academic decisions. At the heart of these efforts is an attack on the subject matter sociologists teach and study, including inequality, race, gender, and sexuality. The current political movement against so-called “divisive concepts” is an existential threat to our discipline. The best way to fight this is to demonstrate to voters and policymakers the value of the work we do. Please help us in our effort to demonstrate the value of sociology. What can you do? We’ve all done work that has made an impact. Impacts might include influencing policy change at the local or broader levels or doing research that has raised awareness about current social problems, such as disparities in access to healthcare or affordable housing. Impacts might include applying research methods in new ways or giving a talk at your local library that provides members of the community with tools for better managing teen social media use. If you are a sociologist or a sociology doctoral student, please share one of your impact stories describing, in 500 words or less, one way in which your work has had an impact. We are hoping to collect hundreds of these stories that we can deploy for a wide range of advocacy efforts. Help us create a compelling group of narratives. Three weeks ago I presented my undergraduate thesis at Warren Wilson College, titled 'Reimagining Care; Exploring the Relationship Between Reproductive Justice and Doula Work'. I could not have done this without the support of Dr. Susan Ortiz and Dr. Siti Kusujiarti. I also want to thank the doulas that I had the honor of collaborating with and everyone who was there for me throughout this process. If you are interested in seeing the full video of my capstone, let me know. #reproductivejustice #communityengagedresearch #sociology

Excited to share that I've earned my Certificate of Higher Education in Sociology at Newcastle University! 🎓 Over the course of my studies, I've gained valuable insights into social structures, human behavior, and the forces that shape our societies. This accomplishment has deepened my understanding of how we can create more equitable and inclusive communities, and it has further fueled my passion for exploring social change. I am looking forward to applying these skills and knowledge as I continue my BSc Psychology degree. I am always open to connecting with those who share the same values and discussing how we can make a positive impact together. #Sociology #Education #SocialChange #ContinuousLearning #Psychology

In my second semester of freshman year, a book called “The Stickup Kids” by Randol Contreras sparked a passion for Sociology that I never knew I had. This led me to explore various aspects of life through courses in Education, Criminology, Women’s sociology, Activism, and more. This path influenced 2/3 of my minors: gendered studies and anthropology. As a recent graduate, I'm excited to share my Senior Thesis on a social-psychological analysis of Marijuana use, delving into the intersection of social and physiological factors. My research aims to bridge the gap in understanding why individuals engage in substance use, how it impacts them, and how we can foster healthy relationships with legalized drugs like Marijuana. I concluded that three main factors influence whether an individual has a pleasurable or harmful relationship with marijuana. These factors are Intent behind use, Regulation of use, and Social environments. Working through a qualitative approach gave me much joy and made me realize this is what I want to do. This study marks the beginning of my academic journey, as I plan to pursue a PhD in Sociology within the next year to further explore my interests. If you’re interested in reading my work, you can find it attached below. Additionally, if you know any Sociology professors or researchers seeking an assistant, please reach out, and share my work with them. I’m eager to continue my academic endeavors in a field that truly ignites my passion. #Sociology #Research #MarijuanaAnalysis #SociologicalResearch #AcademicJourney
