Congratulations Dr Anne Schwenkenbecher for her article “Science-policy research collaborations need philosophers” in the highly prestigious journal Nature Human Behaviour. Fifteen researchers from across the globe, co-lead by Dr Schwenkenbecher from Murdoch University’s School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences have shown that philosophical expertise can help close the gap between research and policy. The group describes how philosophers can benefit public policy development, especially when dealing with complex problems, like those faced during the COVID pandemic. “We have shown that some of the problems in translating scientific evidence into public policy are philosophical in nature: how much evidence do we need? What evidence do we need and what does that evidence really show? What obligations do policy-makers have to seek and obtain evidence? “Philosophical expertise can help clarify decision making and integrate philosophical – in particular ethical and epistemological – considerations into policy-making when there are challenges with experts coming together from different disciplines, with varying methodologies and unique points of view, like we saw happening in our own country during COVID, as experts sought to find the best policies and solutions as new problems arose.” Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gtB8RvHj

The choice of philosophical perspective is vital for both marketing and service research. This paper aims to propose a social and systemic perspective that addresses current challenges in service and marketing research by revisiting the philosophy of science debate.

Submitted. In a philosophical sense I am a pragmatist. Drawing loose inspiration from Kierkegaard, I believe that the 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵 truths in life are subjective. While one can have absolute certainty about objective truths - like all angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees - knowing if someone loves you is a deeply subjective matter, based on hope or personal conviction. If you are keen on exploring philosophy, I strongly suggest delving into Jostein Gaarder's novel 𝘚𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘦'𝘴 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. Through the eyes of a child, you will journey through the main philosophical epochs in a structured and chronological manner, gaining insight into the most important philosophical themes. For those of you looking for a more academic summary of philosophical positions in accounting research, I recommend reading Dina Wahyuni’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘻𝘦: 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘮𝘴, 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘔𝘦𝘩𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴.
