Did you know that Einhorn, Barbarito, Frost, Botwinick, Nunn & Musmanno litigator James M. Porfido also serves as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University School of Law? His most recent practical legal skills course took the Class of 2025 on a thorough exploration of persuasion and advocacy and how these tools are applied across a wide spectrum of legal work. As James noted about his curriculum: “Society has this misconception that good lawyers argue, when the truth is, we are tasked with persuading others to see things from our client’s perspective. The sooner a young lawyer or law student grasps this, - and the veteran practitioner remembers it! - the more effective they will be in their client service and life, in general.” Pictured: Phoenix Burke, Jacob Barth, Victoria Jewula, Shannon Finkelstein, Nicole Beshara, Olivia Tomasula, Hannah Caldwell, Katherine Butler, James M. Shy? Introverted? Socially anxious? Is that a drawback in law school and in the professional practice of law? Professor Professor Heidi K. Brown is Associate Dean for Upper Level Writing at New York Law School. According to her bio on the law school's website, "Inspired by her own experience untangling fear of public speaking during her litigation career, she is passionate about helping law students and lawyers find their authentic lawyer voices and overcome anxiety about Socratic legal discourse and performance-based lawyering tasks." Professor Brown has written and spoken extensively on the topic. If you are concerned about this, I recommend you watch a YouTube interview where she offers fundamental explanations and advice. The video has quite a long introduction, but the actual interview begins at 15:39. Prof. Brown defines the difference between introversion and social anxiety or shyness beginning at 21:20. Social Anxiety and shyness, she explains, are based on fear of judgment and being critiqued. (That's for sure. I've been there.) I was surprised to hear that one of her methods of dealing with this is ... get ready ... boxing. (30:30) "It's not like we need to fix ourselves. There's nothing wrong with us. We just need some guidance to figure out the best way to do this authentically..." she explains. At 53:30, answering an audience question, Professor Brown addresses networking and interviewing, offering some great ideas for socially anxious people to handle these one-on-one situations.
