The expansion of Army watercraft has never been more critical for the Pacific region. This expansion will assist with the current intra-theater distribution gap and address tyranny of distance. The need for watercraft is a joint requirement, even the Marines are exploring small expeditionary watercraft. The goal is to get additional watercraft in the region during competition however, barriers include fiscal constraints, timelines asscociated with building and fielding the capability, and ensuring the support facilities are in place in theater to maintain the capability. https://lnkd.in/gyFJTkFN

I believe MAJ Tanya Leonard has adequately framed this problem by acknowledging the intra-theater gap. I like what’s going on here and can appreciate the realignment of resources to meet the emergent need based on the gap. However, there’s much more to address in terms of authorities and ownership of these vessels. I get it, someone said ‘joint’ in the article so it must be joint, right? I’d argue that until there’s a MOC in INDOPACOM with the same requisite and corresponding maritime authorities/responsibilities as the AOC does for the Air Forces, we haven’t achieved ‘joint.’ Nonetheless, #sailarmy #saltwatermindset
