Update 2 on the status of the 7 Snorkels I purchased. Good news - I am 3 working days in. I have 4 out of 7 back at the yard after being put on a trailer under their own feet and functions. These 4 all have electrical faults. I passed them on to my colleagues for paint, filters, oils, leaks, and the electrical repairs needed. I suspect middle of next week for them to start rolling out. Kind of bad news - The last 3. I was told two had bad engines by the owner so there was no surprise. This picture is of a legacy duetz 2011 with a blown head gasket. It is oil cooled. Now, what I personally like about a legacy deutz compared to the competition. Example - I am rebuilding a caterpillar acert engine. Radiator leak causing the engine to overheat and engine computer not set to shutdown when overheating is present. Operator ignores engine code and carries on. Result - Warped block and cracked head. Needs a total rebuild. It got EXTREMELY HOT. Super expensive rebuild Deutz legacy 2011 example - Oil leak causing engine to overheat which then blows the head gasket and oil starts pouring out of the exhaust. Operator instantly shuts it down because his eyeballs can’t ignore what is happening. My last result - Rotating assembly and head were all within spec and level as can be. No damage to cylinder walls. 4 hours labor with a new head gasket and studs. Over 1,000 hours of use and counting. Cross my fingers. If you’re struggling to open and close valves like the operators in this short video, maybe it’s time to take a look at the practical benefits of a Modec Air Motors & Portable Valve Actuators. This short video graphically illustrates the difficulties these operators are having. It requires a leverage bar, hooked into the spokes and rim of the pedestal wheel to apply enough effort to operate the valve. Imagine if the wheel needs to be turned 100 times! That’s a lot of manual effort required. But with the Modec MC89 with an FSB wheel drive adaptor, the task suddenly becomes a lot easier. The unanswered question is why the wheels have become so stiff to turn? Some maintenance work must be needed. Also, should this pedestal have a larger wheel to ease the task for the workers. Even if the valve was brand new, a Modec portable valve actuator will make the task much easier, reducing the effort required, reducing the chance of strain injury to the operator, and speeding up the task. Lift cylinder for the pole guide. 90% of the failures we find during our ANSI inspections should of been identified during the set up and inspection of equipment prior to use. ANSI/ASSE A10.31 - 10.8.1 Pre-Start Inspection states: Items determined by the owner in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations for each specific digger derrick SHALL be inspected for defects prior to each day's operation. The operator SHALL perform the following test and inspections once daily, prior to first use: Daily set up and inspection of equipment should take 20 to 30 minutes each day. This should be looked at as an investment in assuring that the equipment won't have a premature failure that day. ANSI provides a 13 point checklist in the code. The manufacturer also provides it in the operations manual. We too provide the checklist. This week our crews are home with their families and friends enjoying Thanksgiving week.
