- Colleen Graham Senior Director Analyst, Gartner
Data is the foundational building block to managing and reporting on business-critical issues. Poor data leads to poor decisions and even poorer results (“garbage in, garbage out”).
→Companies do not need to reinvent the wheel for #ESGData management and governance because there already exists a body of knowledge, systems, and best practices.
→Data quality is often cited as one of the biggest hurdles in #ESGIntegration, but there are several #DataGovernance and management fundamentals that come before (and contribute to) quality. These concepts precede the more “popular” debate around the harmonisation of external #ESGReportingStandards.
→ A corporate mindset to view ESG performance data as core business data has been slow to take hold, but the tangible benefits of fulsome, quality ESG data and disclosure are now impossible to ignore.
→Advances in technology and business applications that utilise AI will refine the ESG data collection, assurance, and sustainability reporting ecosystem–but an issues management-driven culture remains key.
→“Quality in, quality out” (QIQO) inherently contributes to trust-building across all levels of an organisation as well as with external stakeholders. ESG data and disclosures are ripe for more trust.
