#HumansOfIDinsight | "What do you want to be when you grow up?” As one of five kids in southwest Nigeria, my responses to that question varied every time it was posed. Sometimes, it was predictable responses (for a Nigerian home) like a doctor, lawyer, computer engineer, or pilot. Other times, it was to be a slightly unusual scientist, a farmer (at one point), and even a millionaire (as if it were a job in itself). Time brought clarity when I chose to study Applied Computer Technology with a focus on Cybersecurity in my undergraduation, or so I thought. Five years later, I was graduating again with an MBA in Strategic Management while working for an Ed-Tech start-up. During my time working in Ed-tech in Nairobi’s vibrant start-up scene, I took diverse roles in marketing, recruitment, operations, and special projects. This cocktail of experience, coupled with my background in technology, led me to design tech-enabled recruitment experiences leveraging non-traditional measures of academic potential for a pan-African higher education institution on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. The sum total of my experiences working in ed-tech and HigherEd crystallized in my mind the tremendous potential of high-quality education as an impact channel for sustainable development on the African continent. The decision to move back to Nairobi to join IDinsight was an ideal choice. Almost 3 years after taking the leap, I have developed more of an appreciation for the role of rigorous data and evidence in achieving and sustaining impactful outcomes. Personally, I'm also proud to be part of an organization that exercises a high level of care for not just its work but also its people. Hence, today, at IDinsight, I stand at the confluence of what I now believe is my passion and purpose - the challenge of helping to define what a cost-effective and fit-for-purpose information security program looks like in low-resourced contexts. It’s been nearly a year since consultants Julia Gunnarsson and David Arvidsson participated in OPX Partners' collaboration with East Africa Investments Ltd. Over 3-weeks in Kigali, Rwanda, they supported the HR/Fintech platform PesaChoice (now Huza HR). As planning gets underway for the 2024 trip to Rwanda, Julia shares some reflections on the lasting impact of the experience. Looking back, what do you remember most about the trip? – The ‘ordinary’ day-to-day work. Meeting the local team every morning, having lunch together, learning new things about Rwanda, and being able to interact with all the friendly people. What was the most rewarding part of your engagement with Huza HR? – The overall collaboration – it truly felt like working together we could identify and implement improvements to the business. It was also really rewarding getting to know CEO and Founder Davis Nteziryayo, who spent a lot of time teaching us about Rwandan history and culture. How did the trip help you grow as a consultant? – The trip helped me to grow in two primary ways: First, by becoming more independent, and able to make executive decisions without always double-checking with a senior colleague. Second, it helped me learn how to plan and structure a project, act as the project manager, and manage an entire project from start to finish. What would you say to someone who is still uncertain about whether or not they would want to participate? – I would say that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to work in such a culturally different environment that will challenge and develop you as a person on multiple levels – not only professionally but also personally by broadening your perspectives – all while you get to work with something that truly helps and benefits the people of Rwanda in their daily lives. #OPXPartnersPeople #career #creatingvaluetogether

This is so true. There is a recent World Bank-funded project set for East Africa - Kenya, Nairobi - the project includes dozens of sub-projects and is for a total budget allocation of about $490 Mil roughly. Several local agencies are willing to work with Indian companies and create necessary business arrangements to take your services, represent it there, and bid jointly with you for these projects. I am aware of several of these and the opportunities are a fact. I even had a few discussions with some of them. They are open and willing to work with Indian IT firms -who are already a preferred player. Sarthak Ahuja is right - the pace at which Chinese firms have moved in is astounding but frankly not new. I saw this in South Africa a decade ago too in telecom -once my flight was full of Huawei and ZTE engineers for all those telco projects. But this applies to every industry. I recently completed a consultancy with Emerging Consulting Group (ECG). Contracted by Kaizen, A Tetra Tech Company which is USAID/BHA New Partnerships Incubator, ECG was assigned to support a local NGO based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in the area of talent management. As ECG’s Workforce & Talent Management expert, I supported the local NGO by reviewing its employee policies and developed new ones. Other key areas of support included: - Guidance and tools on Succession Planning and Talent Mapping,  - Talent capacity assessment and recommendations  - Performance Management  - Automated HR Information systems The 6 weeks’ consultancy was one of my gratifying experiences. I found myself fulfilling my passion for supporting local organizations to strengthen their capacity not only as a tool to attract funding but more importantly, to build self-sustainability. A key take away from this consultancy is that local NGOs have so much to offer. They are well grounded, know the communities better and know how best to navigate local systems. Given appropriate financial, material and technical support, they can reach higher operational standards. Right levels of such resources will ultimately enable them to acquire and retain quality human capital, an area that challenges some local NGOs. In 2022, I wrote notifying of my transition from formal employment. In my message, I mentioned that people in the humanitarian development sector rarely retire. They continue to contribute to the sector through mentorship, advisory services amongst other roles. Likened to soccer, they end up in roles as player-coach, coach, technical team or even club owners. This is proving true. Instead of “hanging my boots”, I am back in the technical team.
