Just sharing my reflections on the European Manufacturing Conference 2024 as I wait for my flight back to Birmingham... Definitely worth the trip over! The Conference (#EMC2024) provided an incredible platform for dialogue and collaboration, and I’d like to share a few key highlights from the event. First, there was consensus on the urgent need for digitalisation and circularity as critical pathways to preserving and enhancing Europe’s manufacturing competitiveness. The challenge ahead is monumental, but with the right strategy and investment in these areas, Europe can regain its leadership. I truly believe that our situation in the UK manufacturing is very similar and we need to push harder than ever for smarter and more sustainable products to secure UK manufacturing and engineering jobs! A big shout out to Alvin Wang Graylin for his outstanding keynote on AI and metaverse! His insights on how productivity gains correlate with more technology and fewer working hours really struck a chord. As we embrace future technologies, we must also prepare for the skills and jobs of the future to maintain European manufacturing's competitive edge. Finally, the Draghi Report was a recurring theme throughout the conference, offering essential reflections on European manufacturing. Interestingly, after speaking with colleagues in the UK, it’s clear that this critical report has not yet made the rounds in the UK manufacturing and academic communities. A few key takeaways particularly relevant to UK manufacturing: 1. The Innovation Gap – Europe must close its innovation gap with the US and China, particularly in advanced technologies. The report stresses the importance of fostering start-ups and scaling innovative companies. 2. Decarbonisation and Competitiveness – A joint approach to decarbonisation is crucial. We must seize opportunities in clean technologies while addressing the energy price gap, which is much higher than in the US and China. 3. Reducing Dependencies – We must increase security and resilience in our supply chains by reducing dependencies on critical raw materials and digital technologies, especially from China. Building resilient supply chains is a must. It’s clear that the road ahead is challenging, but as I leave Brussels, I am fully convinced that if we align policies and work together across academia and industry, we can navigate these complexities and ensure that the UK and European manufacturing future remains bright. Sponsorships of international football/ soccer tournaments are a sign of the times - economically and geopolitically. In 2010, it was one indicator that the global energy revolution was unstoppable - and Chinese led in many regards - when Yingli Solar became the first Chinese and first solar sponsor of the men‘s World Cup. Will #Alipay’s sponsorship of this year‘s #EURO 2024 contest look similarly telling in future years? I don‘t know. But I couldn‘t but notice the adds all over the place as my country of birth beat the country of my heart (and 20s) last Friday (see picture). Never heard of Alipay (like I hadn’t of Yingli Solar in 2010)? Well, they are big … and facilitate more transactions than VISA and Mastercard combined! Alipay‘s story of massive, fast growth years ago illustrates the potential of big techs moving into financial services. And it‘s clear that Alipay‘s sponsorship of the EUROs is an attempt to get better known and accepted in Europe. It‘s also clear that if Big Techs move into finance even more also in Europe they need appropriate regulation. Europe can avoid some of the problems for functioning markets, consumers and democracy that are evident in the US and China, if the newly elected EU parliament and the next Commission act now. Carolina Melches and Michael Peters set out what is at stake and what policy options exist in this report: MORE MONEY, MORE POWER: BIG TECHS IN FINANCE: https://lnkd.in/dqbasqvX Happy reading and thanks to Stiftung Mercator GmbH for the support. #EURO2024 #UEFA #sponsorship #bigtechs #power #finance #football #democracy

Curious about the economics of hosting the biggest sporting event in the world? #Paris2024 is just around the corner and the fervor is already palpable. But what will hosting the games mean for the French economy? Our economists did the math. Here's what they expect: 🧳 A EUR1.8bn boost from tourism, with 5.4 million additional visitors 🏗️ A EUR8.3bn boost from spending on infrastructure Adding up to a total boost of over EUR10bn for France's GDP 📈 But that's not all. From the positive health effects to women's empowerment to the transformative impacts of AI, there are many other aspects of the #OlympicGames to consider. As the Spring Meetings 2024 are drawing to a close, here's a quick recap of what caught my eye (mainly based on what the governers said at the Development Commitee plenary) 1. The World Bank reform process has entered implementation and has been commended. 2. New commitments to increase the Bank's lending capacity have been announced: a. Hybrid capital: Italy pledged 100 million euros, the UK 100 million pounds, the Netherlands 68 million euros (subject to approval), and some other countries. Germany was the pioneer here when it provided 300 million last year. b. Portfolio guarantee platform: France pledged EUR 500 million (the US had pledged last year, but it is still subject to congressial approval). 3. The new World Bank-AfDB cooperation to bring electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030 is one of the biggest news of these meetings. 4. IDA21 replenishment will start soon, with many countries expressing their support. A potentially big topic in the coming months. 5. Ajay's Private Sector Investment Lab presented their first recommendations. Private sector mobilization remains high on the agenda. 6. Ajay promised to start preparing the next shareholder review for the World Bank's 2025 (potential) capital increase after the Meetings. 7. Contrary to my expectations, other issues such as debt crises, SDRs and callable capital were mentioned in passing and didn't take center stage. #SM2024 #SpringMeetings2024 #WB #IMF
